Audrey Purton
Lieutenant Colonel Audrey Irene Purton OBE (8 May 1926 – 20 May 2016) was Deputy Assistant Provost Marshal of the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) from 1975 to 1982. Her 1982 OBE citation stated "that through her dedication, persistence and selfless concern for the Army and her policewomen she had created an elite branch of the Provost Service." Women’s Royal Army Corps
The Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC; sometimes pronounced acronymically as , a term unpopular with its members) was the corps to which all women in the British Army belonged from 1949 to 1992, except medical, dental and veterinary officers and chaplains (who belonged to the same corps as the men), the Ulster Defence Regiment which recruited women from 1973, and nurses (who belonged to Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps). History The WRAC was formed on 1 February 1949, by Army Order 6, as the successor to the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) that had been founded in 1938. For much of its existence, its members performed administrative and other support tasks. In March 1952 the ranks of the WRAC, which had previously been Subaltern, Junior Commander, Senior Commander and Controller were harmonised with the rest of the British Army. She Never Married
"He never married" was a phrase used by British obituary writers as a euphemism for the deceased having been homosexual. Its use has been dated to the second half of the 20th century, and it may be found in coded and non-coded forms, such as when the subject never married but was not homosexual. A similar phrase is "confirmed bachelor". Usage Conventional obituaries concluded with a summary of the members of the immediate family of the deceased, typically the spouse, if surviving, and children. The phrase "He never married" thus became a staple euphemism of obituary writers used to imply that the subject was homosexual. Sex between men was illegal until 1967, so few men were openly gay. The ambiguity of the phrase has been commented on, however, by a number of sources.
