Audree Norton
Audree Lauraine Norton (January 13, 1927 – April 22, 2015) was a deaf actress and educator. She was born in Great Falls, Montana and raised in Minnesota. Biography Audree's parents were Lauraine (née Greenman) and Joseph Bennett. At three years old she became Deaf from spinal meningitis. Two years later her parents divorced and soon after she and her mother moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. Her mother enrolled her at the W. Roby Allen School in Faribault, Minnesota. The Allen School used the oralism method that taught speech and lip reading and did not permit the use of sign language. Audree's mother learned that if Audree was to attend Gallaudet College (now university) she would have to attend the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD) that was located across the street from the Allen School. Great Falls is the third most populous city in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat of Cascade County. The population was 60,442 according to the 2020 census. ''ABC Afterschool Special'' is an American television anthology series that aired on American Broadcasting Company, ABC from October 4, 1972, to January 23, 1997, usually in the late afternoon on weekdays. Most episodes were dramatically presented situations, often controversial, of interest to children and teenagers. Several episodes were either in animated form or presented as documentaries. Topics included illiteracy, substance abuse and teenage pregnancy. The series won 51 Daytime Emmy Awards during its 25-year run. In 2004 and 2005, BCI Eclipse and Sunset Home Visual Entertainment issued six DVD collections of episodes from the series that had been produced by Martin Tahse, each collection containing four episodes. Gallaudet University Alumni
Gallaudet University ( ) is a private federally chartered research university in Washington, D.C. for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing. It was founded in 1864 as a grammar school for both deaf and blind children. It was the first school for the advanced education of the deaf and hard of hearing in the world and remains the only higher education institution in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students. Hearing students are admitted to the graduate school and a small number are also admitted as undergraduates each year. ''NBC Experiment in Television'' is an American experimental television show broadcast on NBC from 1967 to 1971. The format of the show was an anthology series and it usually aired on Sunday afternoons. Many of the episodes were either dramatic pieces or documentaries. The program was nominated for an Emmy in 1968 for editing. The first episode in February 1967, ''Losers Weepers'', was an original play by Harry Dolan about African-American life in an urban ghetto. In March, philosopher Marshall McLuhan explained his theory that "the medium is the message". In the season 4 premiere, "Music", the show documented the Beatles' recording of "Hey Jude". In 1969 the program screened an episode produced and directed by Jim Henson and written by Henson and Jerry Juhl entitled '' The Cube'' and starring Richard Schaal.
