Audain Prize For Lifetime Achievement In The Visual Arts
The Audain Prize for the Visual Arts (Audain Prize) is an annual award that recognizes a distinguished Canadian artist. Worth $100,000, it is one of Canada's most significant honours for the arts. The prize is supported by the Audain Foundation and presented by the Audain Art Museum. History The Audain Prize was established in 2004 by Michael Audain, Chair of the Audain Foundation. In 2019, the prize amount was increased to $100,000, bringing it in line with the Giller Prize and the Sobey Art Award, and renamed (previously the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts). From 2004 to 2018, the Audain Prize was funded by the Audain Foundation and administered by the Vancouver Art Gallery, in conjunction with the VIVA Awards. Michael Audain
Michael James Audain, (born July 31, 1937) is a Canadian home builder, philanthropist and art collector. He is the Chairman and major shareholder of the privately held Polygon Homes Ltd., one of the largest multi-family builders in British Columbia. Early life and education Audain was born in Bournemouth, England. His father was a retired British Army officer, while his mother had a career as a London dress model. Audain attended numerous schools in the United Kingdom due to frequent moves by his split-up family during World War II. His first nursery school was named St. Georges, located on Castle Street in Farnham, Surrey, while his first boarding school was called Melbreck Preparatory School situated in the countryside outside Farnham. Jeffrey Wall, Order of Canada, OC, Royal Society of Canada, RSA (born September 29, 1946) is a Canadian artist best known for his large-scale back-lit Cibachrome photographs and art history writing. Susan Point
Susan Point (born 1952) is a Musqueam Coast Salish artist from Canada, who works in the Coast Salish tradition. Her sculpture, prints and public art works include pieces installed at the Vancouver International Airport, the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C., Stanley Park in Vancouver, the Museum of Anthropology at UBC, the Penn Museum in Philadelphia, and the city of Seattle. Biography Point was born in Alert Bay while her parents, Edna Grant and Anthony Point were salmon fishing. Her parents both used the Salish language Halkomelem in their home on the Musqueam Indian Reserve. Carole Itter
Carole Itter (born September 29, 1939) is a Canadian artist, writer, performer and filmmaker. Life Itter attended the Vancouver School of Art in 1961, which was renamed as the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1978 and then renamed again to the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2008. She later became an instructor at the university. She attended the L'Accademia di Bella Arti in Rome in 1964. Itter lived with her partner, Al Neil, in a structure known as The Blue Cabin, originally built in 1932 and located near Cates Park in North Vancouver. The Blue Cabin was restored and moved to False Creek to serve as a floating artist-in-residency in 2019. Michael Morris D.F.A. (16 May 1942 - 18 November 2022) was a British-born Canadian visual artist, archivist, educator, and curator. Morris has also completed successful works in film, photography, video, installation, correspondence art, and performance. Career Morris was born in Saltdean, England on 16 May 1942. He came to Canada when he was four years old and grew up in Saanich, British Columbia. As a child, Morris was influenced by Herbert Siebner, who arrived in Victoria, BC from Berlin in 1953. Fred Herzog
Fred Herzog D.F.A. (September 21, 1930 â September 9, 2019) devoted his artistic life to walking the streets of Vancouver as well as almost 40 countries with his Leica, photographing - mostly with colour slide film - his observations of the street life with all its complexities. Herzog ultimately became celebrated internationally for his pioneering street photography, his understanding of the medium combined with, as he put it, "how you see and how you think" created the right moment to take a picture. Marian Penner Bancroft (born 1947) is a Canadian artist and photographer based in Vancouver. She is an associate professor at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, where she has been teaching since 1981. She has previously also taught at Simon Fraser University and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Rodney Graham
William Rodney Graham (January 16, 1949 â October 22, 2022) was a Canadian visual artist and musician. He was closely associated with the Vancouver School. Early life Graham was born in Abbotsford, British Columbia, on January 16, 1949. He studied art history at the University of British Columbia and subsequently went to Simon Fraser University (SFU). He intended to concentrate on writing and literature before taking a modern art course taught by Ian Wallace (artist), Ian Wallace at SFU. Robert Charles Davidson LL. D. D.F.A. (born 4 November 1946), is a Canadian artist of Haida heritage. Davidson's Haida name is , which means "Eagle of the Dawn". He is a leading figure in the renaissance of Haida art and culture. He lives in White Rock, British Columbia. Liz Magor
Liz Magor (born 1948) is a Canadian visual artist based in Vancouver. She is well known for her sculptures that address themes of history, shelter and survival through objects that reference still life, domesticity and wildlife. She often re-purposes domestic objects such as blankets and is known for using mold making techniques. Biography Magor was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1948. Magor studied at the University of British Columbia from 1966-1968, and Parsons School of Design in New York from 1968-1970.
