The Territorial Assembly of Wallis and Futuna (French: ''Assemblée Territoriale''; Wallisian and Futunan: ''Fono fakatelituale'') is the legislature of Wallis and Futuna. History The Assembly was established by article 11 of the 1961 statute which established Wallis and Futuna as an overseas territory. Elections The territorial assembly consists of 20 members, elected for a five-year term by proportional representation in multi-seat constituencies. ʻUvea has 13 seats — 6 for the Mua District, 4 for the Hahake District, and 3 for the Hihifo District. Futuna has 7 seats, 4 for the Alo District and 3 for Sigave. The electoral system uses a closed list, with voters voting for a single party. David Vergé (born 10 January 1972) is a Wallisian politician. He represented Wallis and Futuna in the French National Assembly from 2012 to 2013 and was president of the Territorial Assembly of Wallis and Futuna from 2017 to 2019. Vergé was born in La Fère in France and is a businessman. He was first elected to the Territorial Assembly of Wallis and Futuna in the constituency of Hahake in the 2012 Wallis and Futuna Territorial Assembly election. Nivaleta Iloai was a politician from Wallis and Futuna. She served as the first female president of the Territorial Assembly of Wallis and Futuna from April 1 to December 11, 2013, as well as November 26, 2020 to March 25, 2022. She was a member of the Union socialiste pour Wallis-et-Futuna, and represented the constituency of Hihifo. Nivaleta Iloai was replaced as president by Petelo Hanisi in her first term, after serving only 8 full months. She was again elected president of the Territorial Assembly on November 26, 2020, serving for two more years until 2022. Nouméa Accord
The Nouméa Accord of 1998 is a promise by the French Republic to grant increased political power to New Caledonia and its original population, the Kanaks, over a twenty-year transition period. It was signed 5 May 1998 by Lionel Jospin, and approved in a referendum in New Caledonia on 8 November, with 72% voting in favour. Under the accord, two more referendum votes, on whether to remain a special collectivity of France or become an independent state, have been held. One was held in 2018, and the second was held in 2020. In both votes a majority chose to remain French. The Nouméa Accord permitted a final referendum to be held, voted for by the Congress of New Caledonia. It was held December 2021 and overwhelmingly rejected independence.
