Atlético Madrid Rugby was the rugby union section of Spain, Spanish club Atlético Madrid. Established in 1914, the squad achieved several regional and national titles before the section was closed in 2014. History Atlético Madrid was the rival of Real Madrid Rugby, Real Madrid in the debut of ''Merengues'' in rugby union, on January 10, 1925 in the Stadium Metropolitano, Atlético lost to Real Madrid by 27–0. The squad won the "Copa de Navidad" (Christmas Cup) in 1948, defeating Facultad de Medicina and Club Deportivo Arquitectura, Arquitectura among others. In 1949 Atlético defeated Arquitectura by 9–6, qualifying for the Spain national championship. In May 1949, the squad beat Facultad de Derecho de Madrid by 6–0, reaching the national championship final. The Spanish Rugby Federation ( es, Federación Española de Rugby) is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in Spain. Club Deportivo Arquitectura
Club Deportivo Arquitectura is a Spanish rugby union club. Established in 1931, the team currently competes at División de Honor B, the second division of Spanish rugby. Arquitectura is also the most successful club with a total of 17 titles won to date. History In 1931, fifteen students of the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid decided to form the first rugby union team of the School. Captained by Santiago Soler (who had experience having played for Atlético Madrid) the club won its first University championship that same season. The squad would also win the title in 1935 and 1936. After a hiatus due to the Civil War, Arquitectura won a series of titles in the University championship, winning 13 titles (12 consecutive between 1948–1959; 1963). Rugby union is a growing team sport in Spain. As of 2019, there were 37,241 registered rugby union players in Spain, playing for 332 clubs in various divisions. The sport's governing body in Spain, the Spanish Rugby Federation (Spanish: Federación Española de Rugby), was founded in 1923. It joined the International Rugby Board in 1988,Bath p74 and is also a member of Rugby Europe. There are traditionally four main rugby playing regions in Spain: the capital Madrid, the city of Valladolid in the Old Castile region, the entire regions of Basque Country, and Catalonia, particularly in the north and also around Barcelona. Rugby has been emerging recently in Valencia and Andalucia as well, with clubs like Marbella or CAU Valencia providing several players to the national team. The División de Honor de Rugby is Spain's top level professional men's rugby union competition. The División de Honor de Rugby Championship is organised by the Federación Española de Rugby (Spanish Rugby Federation) and currently consists of 12 teams. The last-placed team in the competition is relegated at the end of the season to the División de Honor B, Spain`s second level of men's rugby union. The team finishing 11th enters a relegation/promotion playoff with the runner-up from the Division de Honor B playoffs. Format The División de Honor season takes place between September and March, with every team playing each other home and away for a total of 22 matches. Tres Cantos
Tres Cantos is a municipality of Spain located in Community of Madrid. Originally belonging to Colmenar Viejo, it seceded from the latter municipality in 1991, becoming the youngest municipality in the region. The urbanised area was conceived as a "satellite city" of Madrid developed by urban planners in the 1970s. It has a population of 48 326 inhabitants in 2020.
