Atlas Building, Perth
The Atlas Building is a heritage-listed building in Perth, Western Australia. It is located in the Perth central business district at 8–10 The Esplanade, and sits along the south-western side of Sherwood Court. The construction of the building in the 1930s was well documented. The building was constructed for the Atlas Assurance Company, in an Inter-War Free Classical style, with an art-deco entrance and elevator. It has historical significance both architecturally and as one of few commercial developments in Perth constructed during the depression years. The Esplanade (Perth)
The Esplanade is a road between Barrack Street and William Street in the Perth central business district. It has been regularly confused with the former reserve Esplanade Reserve, that existed before the creation of Elizabeth Quay. It follows the edge of the Elizabeth Quay area that has been developed on Perth Water, and has had notable buildings and areas adjacent to its short route. The properties on the street include CSBP offices (now Wesfarmers House) that followed the demolition of the Esplanade Hotel, the Griffin Centre, and the Atlas Building. Sherwood Court, Perth
Sherwood Court is a short sloping road between St Georges Terrace in Perth, Western Australia and The Esplanade with Allendale Square on the upper corner, and Lawson Apartments on the lower. It sits across from London Court and allows pedestrian access between the central business district and The Esplanade and Perth foreshore. Its context has been taken into consideration in planning of the Perth foreshore development in that it is claimed that planned structures on The Esplanade will not block the view to Perth Water. The images of former buildings on the St Georges Terrace corner provide context to the early architecture now lost. The Cecil Building at number 6 was frequently photographed, as was Sherwood House. The Museum of Perth is a private, non-profit museum located in the Atlas Building, 8-10 The Esplanade (opposite Elizabeth Quay), in Perth, Western Australia. It aims to chronicle the social, cultural, political and architectural history of Perth. Beginnings It began life as a virtual museum on the social media site Twitter in October 2012, created by Dallas Robertson, a museum studies student at Edith Cowan University. It was expanded into Facebook the following year. Following an online article about the Twitter page from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (Perth) in 2013, Perth City councillor Reece Harley approached Robertson with the view to opening a bricks and mortar version of the museum. The City of Stirling is a local government area in the northern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth about north of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and has a population of over 223,000, making it the largest local government area by population in Western Australia.
