The Atlanta Renegades Rugby Football Club (also known as The 'Gades), founded in 1971, is a premier D1 men's rugby union team based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The club competes in and is governed by the Georgia Rugby Union (GRU), USA Rugby South (USARS), and USA Rugby. History The Atlanta Renegades Rugby Football Club was founded in 1971 by a small group of athletes dedicated to the game of rugby. The aspirations of the club were not great; in fact at that time there were no club championships, select sides, territorial sides or national side. The Club Philosophy was simply to WORK HARD, PLAY WELL and HAVE FUN. Since then rugby has grown to have multiple layers of competition in the U.S. True to the traditions laid down in the beginning - Renegade sides have earned a respected place in the history of Southern and American rugby. The Georgia Rugby Union (GRU) is the Local Area Union (LAU) for rugby union teams in the U.S. state of Georgia and other parts of the Southeastern United States. The GRU is part of USA Rugby. It is a non-profit organization and is the primary overseeing body for the promotion of rugby union in the region. The GRU has been in existence since perhaps as early as 1978. USA Rugby South
USA Rugby South is an organization that combines a number of unions in the south-east of the USA for competition and representative honours. Their representative team is known as the Panthers. Originally formed as Southern Eastern Rugby Union in 1976, this representative team played against the North Eastern Rugby Union between 1976 and 1982. USA Rugby South organizes inter-union competitions between champion teams from each geographical union, who go on to represent USA Rugby South at national competitions. Since 2013, the USA Rugby South Panthers have competed in the NACRA Rugby Championship and were crowned champions in their first year, beating Trinidad and Tobago in the final. Atlanta Silverbacks Park is a sports complex in unincorporated DeKalb County, just outside Atlanta, United States that is currently used primarily for soccer. It was formerly the home venue of the Atlanta Silverbacks soccer club, from which the complex gets its name.
