The ''gens Atia'', sometimes written ''Attia'', was a plebeian family at Rome. The first of the gens to achieve prominence was Lucius Atius, a military tribune in 178 BC. Several of the Atii served in the Civil War between Caesar and Pompeius. The '' gens Attia'' may be identical with this family, although the individuals known by that name lived nearly a century after the more notable Atii, and are not known to have been related. Origin The gens does not appear to have been of any great antiquity, and none of its members ever attained the consulship; but, since Augustus was connected with it on his mother's side, the flattery of the poets derived its origin from Atys, the friend of Ascanius, the son of Aeneas. Atia (also Atia Balba) (85 BC – 43 BC) was the niece of Julius Caesar (through his sister Julia Minor), and mother of Gaius Octavius, who became the Emperor Augustus. Through her daughter Octavia, she was also the great-grandmother of Germanicus and his brother, emperor Claudius. Biography Early life Atia was the daughter of Julia Minor and her husband praetor Marcus Atius Balbus. Atia had at least one younger sister, and possibly an older one. Due to this, she is sometimes called ''Atia Secunda'' or ''Atia Balba Secunda''. She may also have had a brother. First marriage Her first marriage was with Gaius Octavius, the praetor in 61 BC and then Macedonian governor. Her family lived close to Velitrae, ancestral home of the Octavii. Atia, Bulgaria
Atia ( bg, Атия) is a village in Sozopol Municipality, Burgas Province, south-eastern Bulgaria. As of 2013 it has 825 inhabitants. It hosts Bulgaria's largest naval base. The village is located near Cape Atia, thus its name. It is situated at the northern foothills of Medni Rid Ridge, which is the north-eastern extreme of the Bosna Ridge in the Strandzha Mountains. Environmental problems Until 2001 copper mines functioned in the vicinity of the village. Between 1954 and 1977 all the by-products and waste from the mining operations were dumped in the shallow waters near the Black Sea coast. As a result the village's beach was contaminated with mercury and radioactive elements which give the sand a distinctive dark color. It has been conjectured that it is the same place which is named Attalia in the Peutinger Table.
