Atia (gens)
The ''gens Atia'', sometimes written ''Attia'', was a plebeian family at Rome. The first of the gens to achieve prominence was Lucius Atius, a military tribune in 178 BC. Several of the Atii served in the Civil War between Caesar and Pompeius. The '' gens Attia'' may be identical with this family, although the individuals known by that name lived nearly a century after the more notable Atii, and are not known to have been related. Origin The gens does not appear to have been of any great antiquity, and none of its members ever attained the consulship; but, since Augustus was connected with it on his mother's side, the flattery of the poets derived its origin from Atys, the friend of Ascanius, the son of Aeneas. Praenomina The Atii are known to have used several of the most common praenomina at Rome, including ''Lucius, Marcus, Gaius, Publius'', and '' Quintus''. Branches and cognomina The cognomina of the Atii are ''Balbus, Rufus'', and ''Varus''. The Atii Balbi were fro ...

Atia (mother Of Augustus)
Atia (also Atia Balba) (85 BC – 43 BC) was the niece of Julius Caesar (through his sister Julia Minor), and mother of Gaius Octavius, who became the Emperor Augustus. Through her daughter Octavia, she was also the great-grandmother of Germanicus and his brother, emperor Claudius. Biography Early life Atia was the daughter of Julia Minor and her husband praetor Marcus Atius Balbus. Atia had at least one younger sister, and possibly an older one. Due to this, she is sometimes called ''Atia Secunda'' or ''Atia Balba Secunda''. She may also have had a brother. First marriage Her first marriage was with Gaius Octavius, the praetor in 61 BC and then Macedonian governor. Her family lived close to Velitrae, ancestral home of the Octavii. They had two children: Octavia Minor, born around 66 BC, and the younger Gaius Octavius, born in 63 BC. In his ''Dialogus de oratoribus'', Tacitus notes her to be exceptionally religious and moral, and one of the most admired matrons in the h ...

As a result the village's beach was contaminated with mercury and radioactive elements which give the sand a distinctive dark color. Decontamination operations began in 1997 after it was determined that the background radiation Background radiation is a measure of the level of ionizing radiation present in the environment at a particular location which is not due to deliberate introd ...

Attea
Attea ( grc, Ἄττεα) was a coastal town of ancient Mysia or of Aeolis. If we follow the order of Strabo's enumeration, it lay between Heracleia and Atarneus. It has been conjectured that it is the same place which is named Attalia in the Peutinger Table. Pliny the Elder Gaius Plinius Secundus (AD 23/2479), called Pliny the Elder (), was a Roman author, naturalist and natural philosopher, and naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire, and a friend of the emperor Vespasian. He wrote the encyclopedic ' ... mentions an Attalia in Mysia, but he places it in the interior; and he also mentions the Attalenses as belonging to the conventus of Pergamum. It seems, then, there is some confusion in the authorities about this Attalia; and the Lydian Attalia of Stephanus of Byzantium and this Attalia of Pliny may be the same place. Also, attempts to equate the town with Attaea, a later bishopric near Ephesus, have likewise proved unsatisfactory. Its site is located near ...
