Athol Hodgetts
Athol Raymond Hodgetts (born 20 January 1951) is a former Australian rules football player and administrator, who played for in the Victorian Football League (VFL), and served as the executive director of the Victorian Football Association. Originally from north-western Tasmania, Hodgetts was a key forward who played for Cooee in the North Western Football Union. Aged 19, he made his interstate debut for Tasmania in 1970, and he kicked three goals from full forward in his state's two-point victory against Western Australia, a famous game which has since been inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame. He was cleared to in the VFL in March 1971, and spent two seasons at North Melbourne, playing nine games and kicking fifteen goals. He returned to Cooee and was the NWFU leading goalkicker in 1973, then repeated the feat with Wynyard in 1974. Cooee Football Club
Burnie Dockers Football Club is an Australian rules football club in Burnie, Tasmania, Australia. The club currently competes in the North West Football League (NWFL). Club history The Burnie Dockers were formed as a result of a merger between former TFL Statewide League club Burnie Hawks (formerly known as Cooee) and NTFL club the Burnie Tigers. After several years of bitter hatred in the city between the two rival clubs, both clubs were struggling both on-field and financially by the early 1990s. In late 1993 the Burnie Hawks absorbed the Burnie Tigers and merged, however the club still played as the Burnie Hawks until, with the arrival of former North Melbourne champion Peter German, the club adopted a new emblem, colours and jumper designed to appease both sides of the divide. 1997 AFL Season
The 1997 AFL season was the 101st season of the Australian Football League (AFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Australia, which was known as the Victorian Football League until 1989. The season ran from 27 March until 27 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top eight clubs. Before the season, the Port Adelaide Football Club (SANFL) was admitted to the league, increasing the South Australian membership to two clubs. Foundation club Fitzroy, which had gone into administration in 1996, merged with the Brisbane Bears to form a new Queensland-based club known as the Brisbane Lions. The Footscray Football Club changed its name to the Western Bulldogs. With these changes, the league's size remained at sixteen clubs. When done correctly—loudly and shrilly—a call of "cooee" can carry over a considerable distance. The distance one's cooee call travels can be a matter of competitive pride.
