Athletics At The 2019 Pan American Games – Men's 3000 Metres Steeplechase
The men's 3000 metres steeplechase competition of the athletics events at the 2019 Pan American Games took place the 10 August at the 2019 Pan American Games Athletics Stadium. The defending Pan American Games champion is Matthew Hughes from Canada. Summary Benard Keter took the lead on the first lap. After the second barrier, Altobeli da Silva moved out from the middle of the pack to take the point. Ryan Smeeton followed for the next five laps as others fell off the pace. The crowd was enthusiastic as home town Mario Bazán stayed in the lead group throughout. On the penultimate lap, Travis Mahoney came forward to take the lead down the backstretch and over the water jump. da Silva again took the lead, with Keter moving up to mark. Altobeli Da Silva
Altobeli Santos da Silva (born 3 December 1990) is a Brazilian distance runner. He finished ninth in the 3000 m steeplechase at the 2016 Summer Olympics. In 2017, he competed in the men's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2017 World Athletics Championships held in London, United Kingdom. He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Da Silva was named after the Italian football striker Alessandro Altobelli. In his early years he earned money by delivering leaflets for a local supermarket. He once entered a 10 km road race aiming to win its top prize, a motorbike, which he needed for his job. He failed to win, but met his future coach Guilherme Salgado. Saif Saaeed Shaheen
Saif Saaeed Shaheen ( ar, سيف سعيد شاهين), formerly Stephen Cherono (born 15 October 1982), is a steeplechase runner. He was born in Keiyo, Kenya but now he represents Qatar. He currently holds the world record for 3000 metre steeplechase. He is a two time World Champion in the event. His older brother Abraham Cherono is also a steeplechase runner. He was the 1999 World Youth Champion in the steeplechase and set a world junior record two years later. He won the steeplechase at the 2002 Commonwealth Games for Kenya but switched allegiance to Qatar in 2003. That year he became world champion in the event, although a dispute with the Kenyan Athletics Federation meant he was ineligible to compete at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He set a world record of 7:53.63 minutes in Brussels just ten days after the Olympic final, and later defeated that year's Olympic champion, Ezekiel Kemboi, at the 2004 World Athletics Final in Monaco.
