Athletics events at the 2016 Summer Paralympics were held in the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from September 2016. 177 events were held across both genders where 1,100 athletes competed. The athletics programme was the largest element of the Games programme in terms of entrants and medals awarded. Classification and events Athletes are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows athletes to compete against others with a similar level of function. Ihor Tsvietov (born 2 March 1994) is a Ukrainian Paralympic athlete with cerebral palsy. He competes as T35-classified athlete in 100 and 200 metres sprinting events. He won two gold medals at the 2016 Summer Paralympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: in the men's 100 metres T35 event and in the men's 200 metres T35 event. He also won the silver medal in the men's 100 metres T35 and men's 200 metres T35 events at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. Hunter Woodhall
Hunter Woodhall (born on February 17, 1999) is an American track and field athlete. He won a bronze medal in the Men's 400m T62 at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. On 16 October 2022, Woodhall married his longtime girlfriend, Olympian Tara Woodhall. He made his international debut in 2015 with a silver and bronze medal at the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships, and later won a bronze and silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. After graduating from Syracuse High School, he became the first double amputee to earn an NCAA Division I scholarship. Early life Woodhall was born in Georgia while his father was serving in the military. Woodhall's parents decided to amputate both his legs at 11 months old due to fibular hemimelia. Raised in Syracuse, Utah, he was homeschooled until fifth grade and upon entering public school he was bullied for his disability. Liam Bevan Malone (born 23 December 1993) is a former New Zealand para-athlete, primarily competing in sprint events. David Henson
David Henson, MBE (born 15 September 1984) is a British parasport athlete competing mainly in T42 classification sprint events. He has represented Britain at the Invictus Games, World and European Championships and in 2016 he was selected for the Summer Paralympics in Rio, winning a bronze medal in the 200m sprint (T42). Personal history Henson was born in Southampton, England in 1984. He was educated at St George Catholic College in Southampton before going to University of Hertfordshire to study mechanical engineering. After leaving university he joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to undertake his initial training as an Army officer. He passed out of Sandhurst in 2008, joining the 22 Engineer Regiment as Second Lieutenant. Ntando Mahlangu
Ntando Mahlangu (born 26 January 2002) is a South African Paralympic athlete. He won the gold medal in both the men's long jump T63 and men's 200 metres T61 events at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. He won the silver medal in the men's 200 metres T42 event at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is also a two-time medallist at the World Para Athletics Championships. Richard Whitehead (athlete)
Richard Whitehead MBE (born 19 July 1976) is a British athlete. He runs with prosthetic legs, as he has a double through-knee congenital amputation. He set world records for athletes with a double amputation, in both the full and half marathon. At the 2010 Chicago Marathon, he broke his previous world record for athletes with lower-limb amputations, with a time of 2:42:52. Whitehead's marathon record was beaten by 28 seconds by Marko Cheseto at the 2019 Boston Marathon. Whitehead was unable to compete in the marathon at London 2012 as there was no category for leg amputees, and was refused permission by the IPC to compete against upper-body amputees and so had to turn to sprinting to compete at the 2012 Paralympics, where he won the gold medal in the 200m T42 Athletics event with a world record time of 24.38 seconds. Hernan Berrato (born 14 April 1991) is an Argentine Paralympic athlete who competes in disability athletics in the T35 category.
