2012 Summer Paralympics
The 2012 Summer Paralympics, branded as the London 2012 Paralympic Games, were an international multi-sport parasports event held from 29 August to 9 September 2012 in London, England, United Kingdom. They were the 14th Summer Paralympic Games as organised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). They were the first Summer Paralympics to be hosted by London, and the first hosted solely by Great Britain; the English village of Stoke Mandeville co-hosted the 1984 Games with Long Island, New York after its original host, the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, withdrew due to financial issues. Susannah Scaroni
Susannah Scaroni (born May 16, 1991) is an American Paralympic athlete. She won the gold medal in the women's 5000 meters T54 event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan. She also represented the United States at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Early life Scaroni injured her spinal cord at the T12 vertebra in a car accident when she was five years old, and had to use a wheelchair thereafter. Career At the 2012 Summer Paralympics, she finished in 8th place in the women's marathon T54 event. Four years later, she also competed in the same event finishing in 7th place. She also competed in the women's 800 meters T54 event at the 2016 Summer Paralympics where she did not qualify to compete in the final. Marathon events have been held at the Summer Paralympic Games, for both men and women, since the 1984 Summer Paralympics in Stoke Mandeville and New York City. They are held as part of the Athletics at the Summer Paralympics, Paralympic athletics programme. Since the 1996 Summer Paralympics, 1996 Games in Atlanta, marathon events, along with all other Athletics at the Summer Paralympics, track events, have been categorised as follows: * Visually impaired athletes compete in categories T11, T12 and T13, based on their level of disability. Totally blind athletes compete in T11 events, and are permitted to run with a sighted guide. Christina Schwab
Christina Schwab (née Ripp) (born July 31, 1980) is an American Paralympic Games, Paralympic basketball player and distance track/road racer. Competition Schwab started competing for Paralympic Games in 2000 where she got into the 5th place at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. Four years later she won a gold medal in Athens, Greece for wheelchair basketball competition and in 2008 she won her second gold in Beijing, China. She was also awarded gold at International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Gold Cup and won bronze medal in track and field trials. She used to get first place at National championships from 2002 to 2004. In 2006, Christina won a silver medal at IWBF Gold Cup and bronze one at IPC Athletics World Championships, IPC World Championships. Edith Wolf
Edith Wolf (née Hunkeler, born 30 July 1972) is a Swiss former wheelchair racer, who competed in the T54 classification. Wolf competed at a range of distances from 400m to marathon length events and is a multiple World and Paralympic Games winner. Wolf has also eight major marathon titles to her name having won the women's wheelchair race at the Berlin Marathon (2011), Boston Marathon (2002 and 2006) and New York Marathon (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009). Tatyana McFadden (russian: Татьяна Макфадден; born April 21, 1989) is an American Paralympic athlete of Russian descent competing in the category T54. McFadden has won twenty Paralympic medals in multiple Summer Paralympic Games. Biography McFadden was born in Leningrad, then Soviet Union, on 21 April 1989. She was born with spina bifida, a congenital disorder that paralyzed her from the waist down. After her birth mother abandoned her in an orphanage that was too poor to afford a wheelchair for her, she walked on her hands for the first six years of her life. The doctors told her she was so sick that she had very little time to live. While in the orphanage, she met Deborah McFadden, who was visiting Russia as a commissioner of disabilities for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
