Chantal Petitclerc (born December 15, 1969) is a Canadian wheelchair racer and a Senator from Quebec. Early life At the age of 13, Petitclerc lost the use of both legs in an accident when at a friend's farm, a heavy barn door fell on her, fracturing her spine at the L1-T12 vertebra. Gaston Jacques, a high school physical education teacher, was to have a decisive influence on her life when he taught her to swim for four lunch hours a week throughout high school as she was unable to participate in the gym course. In a 2011 interview, she stated that, " wimmingreally helped me get more fit and stronger, and helped me live a more independent life in a wheelchair." Swimming also allowed her to discover her competitive drive. While she had previously been first in her class academically, it was her introduction to the world of competitive racing. Tatyana McFadden (russian: Татьяна Макфадден; born April 21, 1989) is an American Paralympic athlete of Russian descent competing in the category T54. McFadden has won twenty Paralympic medals in multiple Summer Paralympic Games. Biography McFadden was born in Leningrad, then Soviet Union, on 21 April 1989. She was born with spina bifida, a congenital disorder that paralyzed her from the waist down. After her birth mother abandoned her in an orphanage that was too poor to afford a wheelchair for her, she walked on her hands for the first six years of her life. The doctors told her she was so sick that she had very little time to live. While in the orphanage, she met Deborah McFadden, who was visiting Russia as a commissioner of disabilities for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Liu Wenjun
Liu Wenjun (born 5 May 1995) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in category T54 wheelchair sprint and middle-distance events. Wenjun competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. There she won a gold medal in the women's 4 × 100 metre relay – T53/54 event, a silver medal in the women's 100 metres – T54 event, finished seventh in the women's 800 metres – T54 event and finished sixth in the women's Marathon – T54 event. Athletics at the 2008 Summer Paralympics were held in Beijing National Stadium from September 8 to September 17. There were 160 gold medals in this sport. Classification Athletes are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows athletes to compete against others with a similar level of function. The athletics classifications are: * 11–13: Blind athletes * 32–38: Athletes with cerebral palsy * 40: Les Autres (others) (including people with dwarfism) * 42–46: Amputees * 51–58: Athletes with a spinal cord disability The class numbers are given prefixes of "T", "F" and "P" for track, field and pentathlon events, respectively.
