The women's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2008 Summer Olympics occurred on 15–17 August at the Beijing National Stadium, the first time this event had ever been held at the Olympics. The qualifying standards were 9:46.00 (A standard) and 9:55.00 (B standard). In the Final, Gulnara Samitova-Galkina of Russia won, with a new world record of 8:58.81: she was the first woman to break the nine-minute barrier for this event. Yekaterina Volkova of Russia tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol) and was disqualified. Gulnara Iskanderovna Samitova-Galkina (russian: Гульнара Искандеровна Самитова-Галкина, tt-Cyrl, Гөлнара Искәндәр кызы Самитова-Галкина) (born 9 July 1978 in Naberezhnye Chelny, Tatarstan) is a Russian distance runner. In July 2004 she ran 3000 metres steeplechase in a new world record of 9:01.59 minutes. Early that year she won a bronze medal over 1500 metres at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships. Zulema Fuentes-Pila Ortiz (born May 25, 1977 in Requejada, Cantabria) is a Spanish middle distance runner. She finished eighth in 1500 metres at the 2002 European Indoor Championships. Roisin McGettigan (born 23 August 1980 in Wicklow, Ireland) is an Irish runner who specializes in the 3000 metres steeplechase. She graduated from Providence College in 2003. Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova (russian: Татьяна Петрова Архипова; born 8 April 1983 in Urmarsky District, Chuvashia as Tatyana Valeriyevna Petrova) is a Russian runner. Anna Willard (born March 31, 1984) is an American middle distance runner. Personal Willard grew up on a farm in Greenwood, Maine. She took up running as a high school student at Telstar High School in Bethel, Maine. She competed as an undergraduate for Brown University and as a graduate student for the University of Michigan. Because Willard missed a track season at Brown due to injury, she had not exhausted her athletic eligibility prior to graduation. Therefore, she was able to compete for Michigan in 2007 as a graduate student. Elena Romagnolo (born 5 October 1982 in Borgosesia) is an Italian steeplechaser, middle and long-distance runner. She is the national record holder in the 3000 metres steeplechase, but now competes mainly in the 5000 metres. Habiba Ghribi () (born 9 April 1984) is a Tunisian middle- and long-distance runner who specialises in the 3000 metres steeplechase. She won the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, giving her country its first Olympic medal by a woman.
