Athletics At The 2004 Summer Olympics – Women's Marathon
The women's marathon at the 2004 Summer Olympics took place on August 22 in the streets of Athens, Greece. These streets were recently painted for the event, which provided an excellent road surface for the athletes. Drawing upon the ancient origins of the race, the marathon began in Marathon, Greece, and eventually ended at Panathinaiko Stadium, the venue previously used for the 1896 Athens Olympics. The 42.2 kilometre (26.2 mile) journey began in Marathon and the race over the classic course began with temperatures exceeding 35 °C (95 °F). The top contenders all found themselves in a large leading group that held a modest pace through the half marathon. A few tried to surge ahead, but a pack of five runners had been separated from the rest of the field to maintain at the front as they passed the 20k mark. Rosaria Console, better known as Rosalba (born 17 December 1979 in Martina Franca, Taranto) is an Italian long-distance runner who specializes in the half marathon and marathon. Biography She won four medals, one of these at junior level, at the International athletics competitions. She participated at two editions of the Summer Olympics (2004, 2012). Corinne Raux
Corinne Raux (born 16 August 1976 in Combourg) is a French duathlete who was duathon world champion in 2002. She also practiced the marathon successfully, taking 15th in the women's event at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Biography Youth Corinne Raux began sport in schools and ran in her youth for an Athletics club. She had some success, but focused on her studies and got a baccalaureate of science. She continued her studies and obtained a state diploma as a physiotherapist in 1998. Living in Savoy she naturally practiced mountain running, the VTT, but also the Duathlon where she had some success. Career in duathlon After resuming sporting activities suspended by her student career, she began practicing Duathlon in 2000 and quickly joined the team of France. Živilė Balčiūnaitė (born 3 April 1979 in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian long-distance runner. Balčiūnaitė finished 4th at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. She also competed in the same event at the 2004 Olympics, finishing 14th. She finished 11th at the 2008 Olympics. Nuța Olaru (born August 28, 1970 in Orodel, Orodel, Dolj) is a female long-distance runner originally from Romania, who became a naturalized United States citizen in November 2012. She specializes in the marathon race. She set her personal best (2:24:33) in the women's marathon (sport), marathon in Chicago, Chicago, IL on October 10, 2004. She won the Big Sur Marathon in 2012, 2013 and 2014, ran the 2013 Boston Marathon in 2:42:57 and the 2014 Boston Marathon in 2:37:29.
