The Women's 400 metres Hurdles at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea had an entry list of 35 competitors, with five qualifying heats and two semifinals (16) before the final (8) took place on Wednesday September 28, 1988. In 1987, the former world record holder Sabine Busch of the GDR, improved her best to 53.24 seconds, before going on to win the World Championship title in Rome in 53.62 secs, with Debbie Flintoff-King of Australia second, GDR team-mate Cornelia Ullrich third, and Jamaica's Sandra Farmer fourth. Both Ullrich and Farmer, who was now competing for the USA as Sandra Farmer-Patrick, failed to make it to Seoul. Farmer-Patrick was disqualified in her semifinal at the US Olympic trials for a lane infringement, while Ullrich missed out on a spot on the GDR Olympic team to Ellen Fiedler and Susanne Losch. The Seoul Olympic Stadium (), also known as Jamsil Olympic Stadium (formerly romanised as ''Chamshil''), is a multi-purpose stadium in Seoul, South Korea. It is the main stadium built for the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1986 Asian Games, 10th Asian Games in 1986. It is the centrepiece of the Seoul Sports Complex in the Songpa District, in the southeast of the city south of the Han River (Korea), Han River. It is the largest stadium in South Korea. Marina Stepanova
Marina Ivanovna Stepanova (née Makeyeva (russian: Марина Ивановна Степанова-Макеева) born 1 May 1950) is a Russian former athlete who competed for the Soviet Union in the 400 metres hurdles, and became the first woman to run under 53 seconds for the event, when she ran 52.94 secs in 1986. Career Born in Meglevo, Imeni Sverdlova, Stepanova started to compete internationally in 1978 at the European Championships in Prague where she finished sixth in her semifinal heat. That year she had a PB of 56.19 seconds in the 400m hurdles. In 1979 she broke the world record for the first time, running 54.78 seconds at the Soviet Spartakiad, defeating previous world record holder Tatyana Zelentsova. Stepanova retired at the end of the 1980 season and gave birth to a daughter in 1981. She returned in 1983 and quickly regained her form. Anita Protti (born 4 August 1964) is a Swiss former athlete who competed mainly in the 400 metres hurdles. She won the silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the 1990 European Championships, and bronze medals in the 400 metres at the 1989 European Indoor Championships and 1991 World Indoor Championships. Her 400m hurdles best of 54.25 secs has stood as the Swiss record since 1991. Career Born in Lausanne, Protti specialised in the 400 metres hurdles. LaTanya Sheffield
LaTanya Sheffield (born October 11, 1963, in El Cajon, California) is a retired hurdler from the United States, who finished in eight place in the women's 400 metres hurdles final at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Career The 1985 NCAA champion running for San Diego State University. She won the bronze medal in the same event at the 1987 Pan American Games. Finally after the 2000 Olympic Trials and an illustrious career, LaTanya Sheffield announced her retirement. After retiring, she lived in Tucson, Arizona, working as the head coach of a track team known as "Pops Tracks Club" and at Canyon del Oro High School. She is currently coaching at Long Beach State University. Personal life Sheffield's daughter, Jaide Stepter Baynes, ran for the University of Southern California where she was a three time Pac-12 Conference champion at 400 meters hurdles.
