Athletics At The 1984 Summer Olympics – Women's 3000 Metres
These are the official results of the Women's 3000 metres event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. This was the first ever 3000 metre race for women at the Olympics; and this, along with the marathon at the same Olympics, were the first women's Olympic athletics races over 1500 metres. The final, held on August 10, 1984, was won by Maricica Puică of Romania. The race most remembered because of the fall of world champion Mary Decker after a collision with Zola Budd. Background Decker was the favorite, having won the same event at the 1983 World Championships. She was largely untested in domestic races. Mary Decker
Mary Teresa Slaney (formerly Tabb, née Decker, born August 4, 1958) is a retired American middle-distance runner. During her career, she won gold medals in the 1500 meters and 3000 meters at the 1983 World Championships, and was the world record holder in the mile, 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. In total, she set 17 official and unofficial world records, including being the first woman in history to break 4:20 for the mile. She also set 36 US national records at distances ranging from 800 meters to 10,000 meters, and has held the US record in the mile, 2000 meters and 3000 meters since the early 1980s, while her 1500 meters record stood for 32 years. Hellen Kimaiyo Kipkoskei (born September 8, 1968 in Moiben) is a retired runner from Kenya. She won many continental competitions. She competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics aged less than 16 NYC MarathonWomen to Watch and at the 1992 Summer Olympics. She is also a multiple Kenyan champion. Jane Elizabeth Shields (née Furniss, born 23 August 1960) is a female English former middle and long-distance runner. Athletics career At the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, she won a team gold medal in 1986, team silver in 1984 and team bronze in 1982, and had a best individual placing of fifth in 1984. Her greatest achievements were the 1985 World Indoor silver medal as well as three European Indoor gold medals. Dianne Margaret Zorn-Rodger (born 9 November 1956) is a retired middle-distance runner from Napier, New Zealand. She competed in the 1500m at the 1976 Summer Olympics and in the 3000 m at the 1984 Summer Olympics and placed ninth in 1984. She married the New Zealand rower Dave Rodger. In 1984, they became the first New Zealand married couple to compete at Olympics. After the 1976 Olympics, she had long breaks from major competitions due to multiple injuries. She recovered by 1982, and that year placed fourth in the 1500m and 3000m events at the Commonwealth Games and finished fifth at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships. Cornelia Bürki (born 3 October 1953) is a South African-born retired long-distance runner who represented Switzerland in three consecutive Olympic Games, starting in 1980, with her best result being fifth in the 1984 3000 metres final.
