Athletics At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's 400 Metres
The men's 400 metres was an event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The competition was held on 3, 4 and 7 September. Sixty-four athletes from 49 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Vince Matthews of the United States, the nation's fifth consecutive and 12th overall victory in the event (all by different men). The Americans' hopes to repeat their podium sweep of four years earlier were dashed by injury in the final. Bronze medalist Julius Sang became the first black African to win a sprint Olympic medal, earning Kenya's first medal in the event. On the victory podium, Vince Matthews and Wayne Collett talked to each other and failed to stand at attention during the medal ceremony. Munyoro Nyamau
Munyoro Nyamau (''Hezekiah Munyoro Nyamau;'' born 5 December 1942 or 6 December 1938) is a Kenyan former athlete and winner of the gold medal in the 4 × 400 m relay at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Anders Faager
Sven Per Anders Faager (3 April 1945 – 20 June 2019) was a Swedish sprinter. He was part of 4 × 400 m relay teams that won a gold medal at the 1974 European Indoor Championships and placed seventh at the 1971 European Championships and 1972 Summer Olympics. David Jenkins (athlete)
David Andrew Jenkins (born 25 May 1952) is a former World ranked no.1 400m track and field sprinter who also ran other sprint distances. He is, statistically, the highest ranking Scottish sprinter in history, above 1980 Olympic 100m champion Alan Wells. He was part of the UK relay team which won a silver medal at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics. Anabolic steroids were banned from athletics in 1976, and Jenkins has said that he began using steroids around then; although his times slowed from this point due in part to his increased propensity for injury. He was a finalist in the 1976 and 1980 Olympics 400m. He received a 7-year prison sentence in the 1980s for drug smuggling but was able to serve only 10-1/2 months by becoming an informant. Silver Ayoo (born 26 November 1950) is a Ugandan former athlete who competed as a sprinter in 400 metre events. He represented Uganda at the 1972 Summer Olympics and 1980 Summer Olympics. Wickremasinghe Wimaladasa
Deshabandu Wickramesinghe Wimaladasa (born 29 August 1943) is a Sri Lankan former sprinter who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics. He won two gold medals at the 1974 Asian Games held in Tehran, Iran, in the men's 400m and relay events. Wimaladasa received his education at Nugawela Salvation Army Primary School and Alawwa Central, where he took part in athletics at school and district level. He enlisted in the Ceylon Army in 1963 and was attached to the 1st Battalion, Gemunu Watch. In 1964, he became the champion of 100 metres and 200 metres in the inter-regiment athletic meet and in 1965 set a 100 meters new national record.
