Athletics At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 Metres
The men's 200 metres was an event at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The competition was held on 3–4 September. There were 57 competitors from 42 nations. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Valeriy Borzov of the Soviet Union, the nation's first medal in the event. Larry Black took silver, extending the United States' podium streak in the men's 200 metres to nine Games. Italy earned its first medal in the event since 1960 with Pietro Mennea's bronze. Background This was the 16th appearance of the event, which was not held at the first Olympics in 1896 but has been on the program ever since. One of the eight finalists from the 1968 Games returned: fourth-place finisher (and 1964 bronze medalist) Edwin Roberts of Trinidad and Tobago. Motsapi Moorosi (4 May 1945 – 8 February 2013) was a Lesotho sprinter. He competed in the men's 100 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Amadou Meïté
Amadou Meïté (November 28, 1949 – February 11, 2014) was a sprinter from Côte d'Ivoire, who represented his native West African country twice at the Summer Olympics: 1972 and 1976. He is best known for winning the gold medal in the men's 100 metres at the 1978 All-Africa Games. Meïté was the father of Ben Youssef Meïté, a double African champion in 2010 and 2012, respectively, in 100 and 200 meters. In January 2014, Amadou Meïté was hospitalized in Abidjan for an undisclosed illness, after being transferred there from the University Hospital in Yopougon. Yeo Kian Chye
Yeo Kian Chai (born 2 November 1943) is a Singaporean sprinter. He competed in the men's 100 metres and the 200 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Yeo competed in the men's 4x100 m relay at the 1967 Southeast Asian Peninsular Games (SEAP Games) and won a silver medal. In the 1969 SEAP Games, he competed in the same event and won a bronze medal. In 1970, Yeo competed in the men's 100 metres and the 200 meters at the British Commonwealth Games. At the 1971 SEAP Games, Yeo won the silver medals for both the men's 100 m and men's 4x100 m relay. He won bronze medals for the men's 200 m and the men's 4x100 m relay. In 1972, Yeo competed in the men's 100 and 200 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics and did not qualify out of his heats. Mike Sands (athlete)
Michael Sands (born 1 July 1953) is a Bahamian former track and field sprinter. During his peak he held the Bahamian records from 100 metres to 400 metres. He represented his country twice at the Summer Olympics (1972 and 1976) and served as flag bearer on both occasions. He was the first ever gold medallist for the Bahamas at the 1975 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Athletics and also won a bronze medal at the 1975 Pan American Games. He now serves as president of the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations, the national governing body for the sport of athletics. Martin Jellinghaus (born 26 October 1944) is a retired West German former athlete who competed mainly in the 400 metres. He competed for West Germany in the 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City, Mexico in the 4×400 metre relay where he won the bronze medal with his teammates Helmar Müller, Manfred Kinder and Gerhard Hennige. Zenon Stanisław Nowosz (born 6 February 1944 in Warsaw) is a Polish sprinter who participated in world athletics for Poland in the late 1960s and 1970s. He competed in the 60 metres, 100 metres and 200 metres. Nowosz won a bronze medal at the 1969 European Championships in Athletics in Athens in 200 metres.
