Athletics At The 1952 Summer Olympics – Men's Triple Jump
The men's triple jump at the 1952 Olympic Games took place on 23 July at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Thirty-five athletes from 23 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. Brazilian athlete Adhemar da Silva won the gold medal, breaking the world record twice. It was Brazil's first medal and first victory in the men's long jump. All three of the nations represented on the podium were relatively new to the event in the Olympics; Brazil had sent triple jumpers in 1948 (including da Silva), but the Soviet Union (Leonid Shcherbakov's silver) and Venezuela (Asnoldo Devonish's bronze) each won medals in their first appearance. Helsinki Olympic Stadium
The Helsinki Olympic Stadium ( fi, Helsingin Olympiastadion; sv, Helsingfors Olympiastadion), located in the Töölö district about from the centre of the Finnish capital Helsinki, is the largest stadium in the country, nowadays mainly used for hosting sports events and big concerts. The stadium is best known for being the centre of activities in the 1952 Summer Olympics. During those games, it hosted athletics, equestrian show jumping, and the football finals. The stadium was also the venue for the first Bandy World Championship in 1957, the first and 10th World Athletics Championships, in 1983 and 2005. It hosted the European Athletics Championships in 1971, 1994 and 2012. It is also the home stadium of the Finland national football team. José Da Conceição
José Telles da Conceição (23 May 1931 – 18 October 1974) was a Brazilian athlete who competed mainly in the high jump but also in sprinting events. He competed for Brazil in the 1952 Summer Olympics held in Helsinki, Finland in the high jump where he won the bronze medal. He competed in Athletics at the 1956 Summer Olympics - Men's 200 metres, the 1956 Summer Olympics in 200 meters finishing sixth in the final. In 1974 he was murdered in Rio de Janeiro. Walter Ashbaugh
Walter Stuart "Walt" Ashbaugh (March 11, 1929, in East Liverpool, Ohio – April 3, 2003, in Toledo, Ohio) was an American track and field athlete and basketball player. Athletic career Running for Cornell University, he competed in the 120 yard high hurdles in which he held the school record. He was also a pivotman on the basketball team, during their most successful 1950–1 season with a 20–5 record. He competed in the triple jump at the 1952 Olympics, finishing fourth. Rune Nilsen
Rune Nilsen (15 September 1923 – 19 July 1998) was a Norwegian triple jumper. He represented IF Tønsberg-Kameratene and IL i BUL. At the 1952 Summer Olympics he finished fifth in the triple jump final with a jump of 15.13 metres. At the 1950 European Championships in Athletics he finished fourth in triple jump and fifth in long jump. He became Norwegian triple jump champion in 1946, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951 and 1952. He won the national silver in 1948 and 1954, and the bronze in 1955. He edged out Kaare Strøm and Eugen Haugland, who had greatly dominated the event before the war. In 1949 Nilsen also became national champion in long jump. Here he won the silver medal in 1950, and bronzes in 1946 and 1952. His personal best triple jump was 15.13 metres, achieved at the 1952 Olympics.
