Athletics At The 1936 Summer Olympics – Men's 400 Metres Hurdles
The men's 400 metres hurdles event at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games took place on August 3 and August 4. There were 32 competitors from 20 nations. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The final was won by American Glenn Hardin. After two Games of silver and bronze medals, it was the United States' first victory since 1920 and sixth overall. However, it was the first time since 1900 that the Americans had only one medalist in the event. John Loaring took Canada's first 400 metres hurdles medal since 1900 with his silver. Miguel White gave the Philippines a bronze in its 400 metres hurdles debut. Background This was the eighth time the event was held. It had been introduced along with the men's 200 metres hurdles in 1900, with the 200 being dropped after 1904 and the 400 being held through 1908 before being left off the 1912 programme. The Olympiastadion (; en, Olympic Stadium) is a sports stadium at Olympiapark Berlin in Berlin, Germany. It was originally built by Werner March for the 1936 Summer Olympics. During the Olympics, the record attendance was thought to be over 100,000. Today the stadium is part of the Olympiapark Berlin. Since renovations in 2004, the Olympiastadion has a permanent capacity of 74,475 seats and is the largest stadium in Germany for international football matches. The Olympiastadion is a UEFA category four stadium. Besides its use as an athletics stadium, the arena has built a footballing tradition. Since 1963, it has been the home of the Hertha BSC. Joe Patterson
Joseph Heste Patterson (August 15, 1912 – May 23, 1939) was an American naval officer who also competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He went by "Pat" Patterson while in the Navy. Early life A native of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Patterson graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1936. While at the Naval Academy, he competed for the track team. That same year, he finished second in the 400 m hurdles at the US Olympic trials for the 1936 Games in Berlin. At the Berlin Games, he finished fourth in 400 m hurdles event, losing out on the bronze medal to Miguel White of the Philippines by 0.2 seconds. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Greenlee in 1938. Alfred Joseph Watson (26 May 1907 – 23 August 1992) was an Australian track and field athlete who competed in the 1928 Summer Olympics and in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Johnny Loaring
John Wilfred Loaring (August 3, 1915 – November 21, 1969) was a Canadian athlete who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and died in Windsor, Ontario. In 1936 he won the silver medal in the 400 metre hurdles event. In the 400 metre competition he finished sixth. He was also a member of the Canadian relay team which finished fourth in the 4×400 metre contest. At the 1938 Empire Games he won the gold medal in the 440 yards hurdles event. He also won the gold medal with the Canadian team in the 4×110 yards relay competition as well as in the 4×440 yards relay contest. In the 440 yards event he finished fifth. On November 20, 1969, Loaring died of cancer at age 54.
