Athletics At The 1928 Summer Olympics – Men's Triple Jump
The men's triple jump event at the 1928 Olympic Games took place on August 2. Twenty-four athletes from 13 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation was 4.Official Report, p. 374. The event was won by Mikio Oda of Japan, the nation's first medal in the men's triple jump. Levi Casey (athlete), Levi Casey put the United States on the podium for the first time since 1924, with his silver. Vilho Tuulos of Finland took bronze, the first man to win a third medal in the event (gold in 1920, bronze in 1924). Background This was the eighth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Olympic Stadium (Amsterdam)
The Olympic Stadium (Dutch: ''Olympisch Stadion'', ) is a sporting venue which was used as the main stadium for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. The venue is currently used mostly for athletics, other sports events and concerts. When completed, the stadium had a capacity of 31,600. Following the completion of the rival De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam in 1937, the Amsterdam authorities increased the capacity of the Olympic Stadium to 64,000 by adding a second ring to the stadium. In 1987 the stadium was listed as a national monument. AFC Ajax used the Olympic Stadium for international games until 1996, when the Amsterdam Arena, since 2018 renamed Johan Cruyff Arena, was completed. Renovation started in 1996, and the stadium was refurbished into the original construction of 1928. The second ring of 1937 was removed, reducing capacity to 22,288, and the stadium was made suitable for track and field competitions again. Jan Blankers
Johan "Jan" Blankers (23 April 1904 – 17 July 1977) was a Dutch athlete and coach. He competed in the triple jump at the 1928 Olympics, but failed to reach the final. He won the national title in this event in 1931 and 1932, but later tore an Achilles tendon, which resulted in his retirement and in a slight limping for the rest of his life. In September 1935 Blankers met Fanny Blankers-Koen at an athletic competition. He was impressed by her talent, but also noticed faults in her running technique. He eventually became her coach and married her on 29 August 1940. They had a son Jan (born 20 August 1941) and a daughter Fanny (born 12 February 1946). In 1935, Blankers also became a national athletics coach and prepared the Dutch team to the 1936 Olympics. Soon after he founded a woman's athletics association ''Sagitta'' in Amsterdam to promote sports among women. Johannes Viljoen
Johannes Hendrikus "Snaar" Viljoen (11 January 1904 – 3 September 1976) was a South African athlete. He competed at the 1928 Summer Olympics in the long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 110 meter hurdles and decathlon, but failed to reach the finals. At the 1930 Empire Games he won the gold medal in the high jump and the bronze medal in the long jump, finishing fourth in the 120 yards hurdles. Wilfrid Kalaugher
Wilfrid George Kalaugher (26 November 1904 – 12 August 1999) was a New Zealand athlete and scholar. He was a school master in Marlborough College, England. Biography Kalaugher was born in Winchester, New Zealand and he grew up in Devonport. He was dux of Sacred Heart College, Auckland in 1921, where there is now a wing named after him. He attended Victoria University of Wellington, where he studied mathematics and competed in athletics, cricket, and rugby. In 1926, he was selected as a Rhodes Scholar to Balliol College, Oxford, where he represented Oxford University in first-class cricket from 1928 to 1931. Arild Lenth (20 November 1904 – 28 March 1972) was a Norwegian long jumper and triple jumper. His personal best long jump was 7.18 metres, achieved in July 1928 on Bislett stadion.
