Athletics At The 1924 Summer Olympics – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw event was part of the Athletics at the 1924 Summer Olympics, track and field athletics programme at the 1924 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on Sunday, July 13, 1924. 32 discus throwers from 18 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation was 4. The event was won by Bud Houser of the United States, the nation's fourth victory in the men's discus throw (and first since 1908); the Americans had medalled in each of the Olympic discus throw events to date. Houser had also won the shot put. Vilho Niittymaa took silver, keeping Finland on the podium in the event for the third straight Games. Thomas Lieb gave the United States its second discus throw medal of 1924, with his bronze. Glenn Hartranft
Samuel Glenn "Tiny" Hartranft (December 3, 1901 – August 12, 1970) was an American athlete. He competed in the shot put and discus throw at the 1924 Summer Olympics and won a silver medal in the shot put, placing sixth in the discus. He won the IC4A championships in both events in 1922 and 1924. In 1924 he set a world record in the discus, which was not ratified because of high wind. Gustav Kalkun
Gustav Kalkun (22 March 1898 – 24 April 1972) was an Estonian discus thrower. He competed at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics and placed 15th and 10th, respectively. He was selected as the Olympic flag bearer for Estonia in 1928. Kalkun graduated from school in Riga, Latvia (1916), and then studied physical education in Tartu, Estonia (1927), and Geneva, Switzerland (1930). He fought as a volunteer in World War I and Estonian War of Independence. He later worked as a physical education teacher in Tallinn, Narva and Tartu and acted as a referee and journalist covering athletics and basketball. In 1944, when Soviet troops arrived in Estonia, he emigrated to the United States. He was physical director of the YMCA in London, Ontario until 1950, when he took the same position at the YMCA in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Paddy Bermingham (athlete)
Patrick Joseph Bermingham (15 March 1886 – January 1959) was an Irish police officer and sportsman, specialising in the discus. He was from Moyasta in County Clare and joined the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Bermingham won ten Irish national discus titles: IAAA titles in 1919 and 1920, and NACAI titles in 1923–4–5–6–7, 1930, 1932, and 1933. He held the Irish record at until 1939. He won five English AAA discus titles: 1924–5–6, 1932, and 1934. He also won four Irish titles in each of the 56 lbs weight throw events: for height (1923, 1925–6, 1929) and for distance (1923, 1925–6–7). He represented Ireland at the 1924 Summer Olympics, but was eliminated in the qualifying round of the discus competition; his longest throw would have qualified for the final six but was discounted as a foul.
