Athletics At The 1999 All-Africa Games
The seventh All-Africa Games were held in September 1999 in Johannesburg, South Africa. As the track is at an altitude of 1748 metres all performances are considered to be set at altitude, this is believed to assist events up to 400 metres and in the long jump and triple jump. However, for events beyond 800 metres the thinner air is believed to have a detrimental effect on performances. Maria de Lurdes Mutola of Mozambique won her third 800 metres title in a row. Nigeria won all four relay races; 4 × 100 metres and 4 × 400 metres for men and women. South African athletes won all four throwing events for men. Some new women's events were added: pole vault, hammer throw and 10 kilometres road walk. Daniel Effiong (born 17 June 1972 in Calabar) is a retired male sprinter from Nigeria. He became African 100 metres and Universiade champion in 1993. Together with Innocent Asonze, Francis Obikwelu and Deji Aliu he won a bronze medal in 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1999 World Championships, but the team was later disqualified (in August 2005) because Innocent Asonze failed a doping test in June 1999. In 100 metres his personal best time was 9.98 seconds, achieved in the semifinal of the 1993 World Championships. Assefa Mezgebu
Assefa Mezgebu (born June 19, 1978 in Sidamo) is a retired Ethiopian long-distance runner, most known for winning a bronze medal in the 10,000 metres event at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He was also the runner-up at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics, following a bronze medal at the 1999 World Championships in Athletics. Tom Nyariki
Tom ("Thomas") Nyariki (born September 27, 1971, in Nyamira) is a long-distance runner from Kenya. Most notably he won a bronze medal on the 5,000 metres at the 1997 World Championships. Nyariki is married to Jackline Maranga. Nyariki represents the Kisii tribe from Nyanza. He trains with Kimbia Athletics and is coached by Dieter Hogen. Fita Bayisa ( Amharic: ፊጣ ባይሳ; born December 15, 1972 in Ambo, Oromia) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner, most known for winning a bronze medal on the 5000 metres at the 1992 Summer Olympics. A year before he had won a silver medal at the World Championships in Tokyo. Before the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Bayisa had emerged as the favourite for 10,000 metres, as he had defeated a world-class field at the Bislett Games in Oslo in a time of 27:14.26 min. David Lelei
David Lelei (10 May 1971 – 17 February 2010) was a Kenyan middle distance runner. who specialized in the 800 and 1500 metres. He was later an athletics official and a political candidate, but died in a vehicle accident in 2010. Career In 1999 Lelei finished seventh in the 1500 metres at the World Championships in Seville, won the silver medal in the same distance at the All-Africa Games in Johannesburg, and finished fifth at the IAAF Grand Prix Final. At the All-Africa Games it was the first time since 1987 without a Kenyan victory in the event. Lelei later finished fourth at the 2001 World Indoor Championships in Lisbon. Hailu Mekonnen (born April 4, 1980 in Arsi) is an Ethiopian runner, who specializes in the 5000 metres and cross-country running. His first medals came in 1998, when he took bronze and team gold at the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and won a silver in the 5000 m at the 1998 African Championships in Athletics. With Haile Gebrselassie as his training partner, he continued to improve, winning the junior race and taking bronze in the senior short course for a medalling double at the 1999 World Cross Country Championships. He also won the 1500 metres gold medal at the All-Africa Games that year. Hezekiél Sello Sepeng (born 30 June 1974), is a South African middle distance runner who won silver in the Olympic 800 metres final in Atlanta 1996 (behind Vebjørn Rodal), the 1998 Commonwealth Games (behind Japheth Kimutai) and the World Championships' final in Seville 1999 (behind Wilson Kipketer). Aïssa Djabir Saïd-Guerni ( ar, عيسى جبير سعيد قرني, born 29 March 1977 in Algiers) is a retired Algerian athlete who predominantly competed in the 800 metres.
