The women's 100 metres sprint event at the 1948 Olympic Games took place July 31 and August 2. The final was won by Dutchwoman Fanny Blankers-Koen. Fanny Blankers-Koen
Francina "Fanny" Elsje Blankers-Koen (26 April 1918 – 25 January 2004) was a Dutch track and field athlete, best known for winning four gold medals at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. She competed there as a 30-year-old mother of two, earning her the nickname "the Flying Housewife", and was the most successful athlete at the event. Having started competing in athletics in 1935, she took part in the 1936 Summer Olympics a year later. Although international competition was stopped by World War II, Blankers-Koen set several world records during that period, in events as diverse as the long jump, the high jump, and sprint and hurdling events. Apart from her four Olympic titles, she won five European titles and 58 Dutch championships, and set or tied 12 world records – the last, pentathlon, in 1951 aged 33. Mabel Walker Thornton (born December 11, 1928) is an American sprinter. She competed in the women's 100 metres at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Thornton was born in Camden, in Wilcox County, Alabama, and attended Camden Academy, where she first ran track. Beatriz "Betty" Kretschmer Ries de Buccicardi (born 24 January 1928) is a Chilean sprinter. She competed in the heats only at the 1948 Summer Olympics, running in the women's 100 metres, 200 metres and relay. She was the long jump gold medallist and 4 × 100 metres relay silver medallist at the 1951 Pan American Games and returned four years later to win a further bronze medal with the Chilean relay team. She also placed fourth in the 200 m at the 1951 Games. At regional level she had a long-lasting career. Audrey ("Mickey") Patterson (September 27, 1926 — August 23, 1996) was the first African-American woman to win an Olympic medal; she won a bronze medal in the 200-meter dash at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. Winifred Sadie Jeffrey, later Jordan (15 March 1920 – 13 April 2019), was an English athlete who competed at the 1938 British Empire Games, 1946 European Athletics Championships, and 1948 Summer Olympics. She was born in Kings Norton, Birmingham. She left school aged 14 to work at Dunlop, where her father was employed, and where she participated with the athletics club.
