Athletics At The 1948 Summer Olympics – Men's High Jump
The men's high jump event was part of the track and field athletics programme at the 1948 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on July 30, 1948. Twenty-seven athletes from 16 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The final was won by John Winter of Australia. It was Australia's first victory in the men's high jump, and only the second time a jumper from outside the United States had won. Bjorn Paulson earned Norway's first medal in the event with a silver. George Stanich took bronze, keeping alive the United States' streak of medaling in every edition of the men's high jump. Background This was the 11th appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. None of the finalists from the pre-war 1936 Games returned. Dwight Eddleman
Thomas Dwight "Dike" Eddleman (December 27, 1922 – August 1, 2001) was an American athlete who was generally considered the greatest athlete in the history of athletics at the University of Illinois. Eddleman participated on the university's basketball, track and field, and football teams between the years of 1942 and 1949. Eddleman earned a combined 11 varsity letters in his career at the university, during which he also became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Eddleman was born in Centralia, Illinois, and attended Centralia High School. On October 24, 2008, Eddleman was named a Distinguished Alumni of Centralia High school. He, along with five others, including James Brady, were the first to be named Distinguished Alumni. His wife, Teddy Eddleman, accepted his award. Vern McGrew
Vern McGrew (December 7, 1929 – January 9, 2012) was an American high jumper. He competed in the high jump event at the 1948 Summer Olympics at the age of eighteen. He used the western roll technique, which was common at the time, and in 1948 achieved a career best clearance of 2.04 meters (6 ft 8¼ in). Born in Big Spring, Texas, he went on to attend Lamar High School in Houston, graduating in 1946. That year he won the Texan state championship with a state record jump. He gained a place at Rice University and competed for the Rice Owls athletic team under their coach Emmett Brunson. Omoba Adegboyega Folaranmi Adedoyin, M.D. (11 September 1922 – January 2014) was a Nigerian-born British high jumper and long jumper, who became the first Nigerian to compete in an Olympics final in 1948. Alfredo Arturo Jadresic Vargas (18 September 1925 – 30 September 2021) was a Chilean scientist and professor of medicine. As a high jump, high jumper he competed in the 1948 Summer Olympics, and placed ninth. Personal life Jadresic was born in Iquique in September 1925. He came from a family of Croatian (Dalmatian) origin. He died in Santiago, Chile, Santiago on 1st October 2021, at the age of 96. According to another source the date was the 30th September. Medical career Jadresic got his Doctorate in medicine and was a professor of medicine at the University of Chile, and then Dean of Medicine from 1968 to 1972. In September 1973, after the coup d'état, he was arrested and spent 51 days in the National Stadium of Chile, but was released with no charges but forced to leave the country.
