Athletics At The 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw was one of six throwing events on the Athletics at the 1908 Summer Olympics programme in London. The competition was held on July 16, 1908. 42 throwers from eleven nations competed. NOCs could enter up to 12 athletes.Official report, p. 32. The event was won by Martin Sheridan of the United States, his second consecutive victory in the event (third if the 1906 Intercalated Games are included). The Americans completed their first sweep in the discus throw, with Merritt Giffin taking silver and Bill Horr bronze. Background This was the fourth appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Martin Sheridan
Martin John Sheridan (March 28, 1881 – March 27, 1918) was a three time Olympic Games gold medallist. He was born in Bohola, County Mayo, Ireland, and died in St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan, New York, the day before his 37th birthday, a very early casualty of the 1918 flu pandemic. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York. He was part of a group of Irish-American athletes known as the "Irish Whales". Career At 6 ft 3 in (191 cm) and 194 lbs (88 kg), Sheridan was the best all-around athlete of the Irish American Athletic Club, and like many of his team mates, served with the New York City Police Department (from 1906 until his death in 1918). Sheridan was so well respected in the NYPD, that he served as the Governor's personal bodyguard when the governor was in New York City. Arthur Kent "Ding" Dearborn (May 27, 1886 – August 28, 1941) was an American Track and field, track and field athlete who competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics. John Falchenberg
John Falchenberg (12 September 1883 – 5 November 1960) was a Norwegian discus thrower. He represented Kristiania IF and IK Tjalve. At the 1908 Summer Olympics he competed in the discus final with a throw of unknown length. He became Norwegian champion in discus throw in the years 1904, 1906-1908 and 1911-1912. In 1904 he became national champion in shot put as well. Michalis Dorizas
Michális Dórizas ( el, Μιχάλης Δώριζας; April 16, 1886 – October 21, 1957) was a Greek athlete who competed in throwing events at the 1906, 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics. He won a silver medal in the javelin throw in 1908 and a bronze in the stone throw in 1906. In the discus throw his best achievement was fifth place in 1908, and in the shot put he placed 11th in 1912. Dorizas was born to Greek parents in Constantinople, where he graduated from the Robert College. In 1913 he moved to the United States to study at the University of Pennsylvania. In the U.S. he soon became one of the best heavyweight wrestlers, winning the intercollegiate championships in 1914-1916. Edward Barrett (Irish Sportsman)
Edward Edmond Barrett (3 November 1877 – 19 March 1932) was a Track and field, track and field athlete, wrestler and hurling, hurler. He was born in Rahela, Ballyduff, County Kerry, Ballyduff, County Kerry, Ireland. Barrett played hurling with the local Ballyduff GAA (Kerry), Ballyduff team. He emigrated to London, joined a local hurling club and was selected for the London GAA team. He was a corner-forward on the London team which won the 1901 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, 1901 All-Ireland Championship, beating Cork GAA 1–5 to 0–4 in the final. It remains London's only senior All-Ireland hurling Championship title. Barrett also appeared for London in the final of the following year, but this time Cork gained revenge, thrashing London 3–13 to 0–0. Mór Kóczán
Móric "Mór" Kóczán (; also known under the pseudonym Miklós Kovács; 8 January 1885 – 30 July 1972) was a Hungarian athlete and Calvinist pastor. Specialized for the throwing events, his best results came in the javelin throw, having won five Hungarian championship titles between 1911 and 1918. Kóczán competed for Hungary at the 1908 Summer Olympics and 1912 Summer Olympics. He produced his best performance in 1912 by winning the bronze medal in the javelin throw event. Following World War I, after the borders of Hungary were redrawn, Kóczán, together with hundreds of thousands of ethnic Hungarians, found himself in the newly created Czechoslovakia.
