Ateneo Art Gallery
The Ateneo Art Gallery is a museum of modern art of the Ateneo de Manila University. It is the first of its kind in the Philippines. It serves as an art resource for the university community and the general public as well. The Gallery is located at the Arts Wing, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan Avenue, Loyola Heights, Quezon City. Collection The Ateneo Art Gallery holds over 500 artworks that include paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, photographs and posters. The collection traces its roots to the late Fernando Zóbel (1920–1984). Painter, art scholar and teacher at the Ateneo, Zóbel donated over 200 artworks to form a study collection for university students. First housed in Bellarmine Hall in 1961, it moved to the ground floor of Rizal Library in 1967, and recently moved to the Arts Wing in Areté on October 1, 2017. Nena Saguil
Nena Saguil (September 19, 1914 – February, 1994) was a Filipina artist of modernist and abstract paintings and ink drawings. She was most known for her cosmic, organic, and spiritual abstract works depicting internal landscapes of feeling and imagination. For these, Saguil is considered a pioneer of Filipino abstract art. Life and career Simplicia "Nena" Laconico Saguil was born on September 19, 1914, in Santa Cruz, Laguna, Philippines, to Epifanio Saguil and Remedios Laconico. Her father was a private physician to the country's second president, Manuel Quezon. One of ten children, Saguil was brought up in a conservative Catholic household. Saguil rejected the Catholic school education her parents desired for her. Egai Talusan Fernandez
Edgar "Egai" Talusan Fernandez (January 20, 1955 – February 27, 2024) was a Filipino socialist-realist painter. His art style was noted for portraying the Philippines as "a multi-ethnic country that is still embroiled in social issues such as civil conflicts." Active in the Philippine art scene from the 1970s onwards, he was particularly known for his activist art which criticized the dictatorship of former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. Fernandez studied advertising at the Philippine Women's University under the mentorship of renowned Philippine abstractionists Lee Aguinaldo and Justin Nuyda, who helped influence his early style. His developing affiliation with activist groups eventually led to him becoming one of the founders of the Kaisahan group, which would become one of the bastions for Social Realism in the country.
