The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison, Kansas, Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The railroad reached the Kansas–Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876. To create a demand for its services, the railroad set up real estate offices and sold farmland from the land grants that it was awarded by United States Congress, Congress. Despite being chartered to serve the city, the railroad chose to bypass Santa Fe, due to the engineering challenges of the mountainous terrain. Eventually Santa Fe Southern Railway, a branch line from Lamy, New Mexico, brought the Santa Fe railroad to its namesake city. The 2017 Aztec High School shooting was a school shooting and murder-suicide perpetrated by 21-year-old former student William Atchison at approximately 8:00 a.m. on December 7, 2017, in Aztec, New Mexico, United States. Atchison entered the school in the morning disguised as a current student and hid in the school restroom. He also played briefly in the National Football League for the St. Louis Rams in 2011, but was released early in the season after a hamstring injury. Early years Atchison was born in 1987 in Houston. Scott Atchison (born July 16, 1962) is a former American racing driver from Bakersfield, California who competed in the CART IndyCar World Series in 1988 and 1989. Scott Barham Atchison (born March 29, 1976) is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who played for the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and Cleveland Indians between 2004 and 2015. Ronald William Atchison (April 21, 1930 – June 23, 2010) was a Canadian football defensive lineman who played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1952 through 1968. He was part of the Grey Cup championship-winning Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1966. Atchison was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1978. He was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. Born in Central Butte and raised in Saskatoon, Atchison played for the Saskatoon Hilltops from 1947 to 1949. Michael Plant Atchison (4 August 1933 – 16 February 2009) was an Australian cartoonist who worked for the South Australian ''Advertiser'' for over 40 years. He was born in Sandringham, Victoria and moved to South Australia with his family in 1939. John David Roy Atchison (August 28, 1954 – October 5, 2007) was an American assistant U.S. Attorney in Florida's northern district who was arrested on suspicion of soliciting sex with a 5-year-old girl. He was also a volunteer coach for girls' softball and basketball teams, and president of a youth sports association. He was arrested in a sex crime sting operation, and charged with "enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity using the Internet", "aggravated sexual abuse," and "traveling across state lines to have sex with someone under the age of 12". Edward Goodrich Acheson (March 9, 1856 – July 6, 1931) was an American chemist. Born in Washington, Pennsylvania, he was the inventor of the Acheson process, which is still used to make Silicon carbide (carborundum) and later a manufacturer of carborundum and graphite. Biography Acheson (1856–1931) was raised in the coal fields of southwestern Pennsylvania. Acheson attended the Bellefonte Academy for three years, 1870–72; this being the totality of his formal education. He left school at the age of 16 to help support his family after his father died, and worked as a surveying assistant for the Pittsburgh Southern Railroad. Atchison is a city and county seat of Atchison County, Kansas, United States, along the Missouri River. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 10,885. The city is named in honor of US Senator David Rice Atchison from Missouri and was the original eastern terminus of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
