ASWAT
Aswat - Palestinian Feminist Center for Gender and Sexual Freedoms, also known as Aswat , is a feminist organization that advocates for lesbians and other LGBT women in the Palestinian community. The group was founded in 2003, making it the first Palestinian organization for lesbians. It was initially membership-based, but has since transitioned to a movement-based structure. It is based in Haifa. The organization was cofounded by activist Rauda Morcos, who received the Felipe de Souza Award from OutRight Action International for her work with the group. Today, Aswat engages in advocacy work and education while also hosting monthly support group meetings that address sexual orientation, gender identity, and nationality. , its co-director was Ghadir Shafie. Rauda Morcos
Rauda Morcos is a Palestinian poet and LGBTIQ activist living in Haifa in Israel. In 2003, she was outed as a lesbian by a national newspaper, leading to dismissal from her job, physical assaults and attacks on her car. She then set up Aswat, the first Palestinian group dedicated to supporting lesbians. Career In 2003, Morcos lost her job as a youth educator after she was interviewed for ''Yedioth Ahronoth'' (an Israeli tabloid newspaper) about her poetry. The journalist promised not to reveal her sexual orientation but then outed her as a lesbian, which led to her being physically assaulted and her car being damaged many times. She received anonymous threats and was concerned for her life. Morcos then set up Aswat ("Voices") in 2003 as an organisation supporting lesbians and bisexual, inter-sex, queer, transsexual, transgender and questioning women. OutRight Action International (OutRight) is a LGBTIQ human rights non-governmental organization that addresses human rights violations and abuses against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. Al Qaws for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Palestinian Society (Arabic: القوس للتعددية الجنسية والجندرية في المجتمع الفلسطيني), often referred to as "alQaws" ("The ainow") , is a Palestinian civil society organization founded in grassroots activism, aiming to be at the forefront of Palestinian cultural and social change. Lesbian feminism is a cultural movement and critical perspective that encourages women to focus their efforts, attentions, relationships, and activities towards their fellow women rather than men, and often advocates lesbianism as the logical result of feminism. Pinkwashing is the strategy of promoting LGBT rights protections as evidence of liberalism and democracy, especially to distract from or legitimize violence against other countries or communities, often to improve a country's tarnished reputation. The concept has been used by Sarah Schulman in 2011 with reference to Israeli government public relations, and is related to homonationalism, the exploitation of sexual minorities to justify racism and xenophobia. Pinkwashing is a continuation of the civilizing mission used to justify colonialism, this time on the basis of LGBT rights in Western countries. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender (LGBT) people in Palestine face a precarious situation due to a lack of civil rights legislation aimed at tackling discrimination. There is also a significant legal divide between the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In the West Bank, same-sex acts were decriminalized in the adoption of the Jordanian Penal Code of 1951 following the Jordanian annexation of the West Bank, Jordanian annexation.
