Asunafo North (Ghana Parliament Constituency)
Asunafo North is one of the constituencies represented in the Parliament of Ghana and also one of the six constituencies in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. Currently, Evans Opoku Bobie was voted and elected in the 2020 general election as the Member of Parliament for the constituency form the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Winning the election with a total of 34,684 votes (52.21%) of the total votes cast beating his rival Mohammed Haruna of the National Democratic Party (NDC). The constituency is seen as one of the stronghold for the New Patroitic Party where they have won the last five general election held in the country. National Democratic Congress (Ghana)
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a social democratic political party in Ghana, founded by Jerry Rawlings, who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. Following the formation of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), which ruled Ghana following the military coup d'état on 31 December 1981, there was pressure from the international community to restore democracy. The NDC was formed as the ruling party ahead of elections in 1992, in which Rawlings was elected president, and in 1996 Rawlings was re-elected as the NDC candidate. Rawlings' second term ended in 2001. The NDC lost the presidency in the 2000 election, and it was not until the 2008 election, that they regained it with John Atta Mills as its candidate. Robert Sarfo-Mensah a Ghanaian politician and member of the Fifth and Sixth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana representing Asunafo North in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana. Early life and education He was born on 1 April 1970 He hails from Mampong in Ashanti region. He had his Executive Master's at GIMPA in 2008. He also has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at University of Ghana in 1996. Employment Sarfo-Mensah is a farmer/agriculturist. He has worked as an Assistant Revenue Officer of VAT Service. He has thus worked as a Public Servant, specifically Tax Officer. He was the member of parliament in the 3rd parliament of the 4th republic of Ghana. The Parliament of Ghana is the legislative body of the Government of Ghana. History Legislative representation in Ghana dates back to 1850, when the country was a British colony known as Gold Coast. The body, called the Legislative Council, was purely advisory as the Governor exercised all legislative and executive powers. Reforms were introduced in 1916 and 1925, although the governor's power remained extensive. In 1946, a new constitution was introduced that allowed for an unofficial member of the Legislative Council to become its president while the governor ceased to be the ''ex officio'' president of the body. 1992 Ghanaian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Ghana on 29 December 1992, the first since 1979. Voter turnout was just 28.1% amidst a boycott by opposition parties, who had claimed the preceding presidential elections in November – won by former military ruler Jerry Rawlings with 58% of the vote – were fraudulent, with international observers considering them not to have been conducted in a free and fair manner. The result was a victory for Rawlings's National Democratic Congress, which won 189 of the 200 seats.
