Astro Theatre
The Rose Blumkin Performing Arts Center or The Rose, also known as the Astro Theater, originally opened as The Riviera. It is located in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. Built in 1926 in a combination of both Moorish and Classical styles, the building was rehabilitated in 1986. History Noted for lavish stage shows combined with movies, the Riviera was regarded as one of the most elegant entertainment facilities in the Midwest. John Eberson, a nationally notable architect, built the theater as an example of the "atmospheric" theater popular during the 1920s. In a style created by Eberson, these atmospheric theaters simulated romantic outdoor Mediterranean courtyards with a night sky above, including twinkling stars and drifting clouds. Moon Theater
The Moon Theater was a silent movie theater at 1410 Douglas Street in Downtown Omaha, Nebraska. The 1,600-seat theater was built on the site of Omaha's first movie theater, the Parlor. In later years the theater was renamed the Town Theater and eventually the Cooper Theater. The building was demolished in 1976. History The Moon Theater was built for the World Realty Company in 1918 at 1410 Douglas Street, and was built right next door to the existing Rialto Theater. The Moon joined the company's other theaters, the Sun Theater at 1410 Farnam Street and the Muse Theater at 24th and Farnam Streets. The World Theater was a vaudeville and movie theater at 1506 Douglas Street in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. Its name was changed to the Omaha Theater in February 1935 when it was sold to new management. It closed on February 26, 1978 and was razed in 1980 to allow for the construction of a parking garage. History The 2,500 seat World Theater was designed by architect C. Howard Crane for the World Realty Company. Crane, a native of Detroit, was one of the foremost theatrical architects in the United States. Harry Lawrie, of the Omaha architectural firm of Mendelssohn, Fisher and Lawrie, oversaw the project from Omaha. The James Black Masonry and Construction Company served as the general contractors. Construction took ten months. The theater was constructed of brick on a steel frame. The exterior was faced in glazed terra cotta all around. The Rialto Theater was a movie theater at 1424 Douglas Street in Downtown Omaha, Nebraska. The building was razed in 1986 and the site paved over for use as a parking lot. The property was later redeveloped as part of the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad's headquarters building. History The 2,500-seat theater was designed by John Latenser & Sons for the Blank Realty Company. The general contractor was Calvin Ziegler. The theater was of steel frame construction with concrete and masonry walls. The theater's exterior was of old ivory and terra cotta, with accents of polychrome blues and reds.
