Astro (convention)
Astro is a contract bridge bidding convention used to intervene over an opponent's one notrump (1NT) opening bid. The name is derived from the initials of the surnames of its inventors - Paul Allinger, Roger Stern and Lawrence Rosler. Astro employs a 2-level overcall in a minor suit when holds an unbalanced hand with at least nine cards in two suits, at least one of which is a major; hand strength should be unsuitable for, or not strong enough for a penalty double, typically no more than 15 points. The minor suit overcalls are artificial and carry the following meanings: :*2 shows at least 5-4 or 4-5 length in hearts and a minor suit, and :*2 shows at least 5-4 or 4-5 length in spades and another suit. When playing Astro but not holding the prescribed two-suited hand, the following calls are available over the 1NT opening by the opponents: :*an overcall of 2 or 2 is natural showing a single-suited hand :*Double is for penalties Subsequent bidding For purposes of subsequent ...

Contract Bridge
Contract bridge, or simply bridge, is a trick-taking card game using a standard 52-card deck. In its basic format, it is played by four players in two competing partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. Millions of people play bridge worldwide in clubs, tournaments, online and with friends at home, making it one of the world's most popular card games, particularly among seniors. The World Bridge Federation (WBF) is the governing body for international competitive bridge, with numerous other bodies governing it at the regional level. The game consists of a number of , each progressing through four phases. The cards are dealt to the players; then the players ''call'' (or ''bid'') in an auction seeking to take the , specifying how many tricks the partnership receiving the contract (the declaring side) needs to take to receive points for the deal. During the auction, partners use their bids to also exchange information about their hands, including o ...

Convention (bridge)
A bridge convention is an agreement about an artificial or a set of related artificial calls. Calls made during the auction phase of a contract bridge game convey information about the player's card holdings. Calls may be "natural" (that is, are based on a holding of the suit bid, or a balanced distribution in the case of a notrump bid) or "" (show a feature unrelated to the named denomination). Purpose Contract bridge is a trick-taking card game played by four players in two competing partnerships in which a sequence of , also known as the auction, precedes the play of the cards. The purpose of this bidding is for players to inform their partners of the content of their hand and to arrive at a suitable contract at which to play the hand (or to prevent the opponents from arriving at a suitable contract). Although bidding is often "natural" (describing a hand by simple reference to possession, shape, and strength of the named suit), players may also bid using conventions, which as ...

Aspro Convention
Aspro is a contract bridge bidding convention devised by Terence Reese as a British variant on the Astro convention to intervene over a 1NT opening bid. Like Astro, Aspro is initiated by a 2-level overcall in a minor suit when the overcaller or intervenorIn the description of competitive bidding, players are referred to as either the Opener (the first to make a ), the Intervenor (the opponent who makes his side’s first bid), the Responder (partner of the Opener) or the Advancer (partner of the Intervenor). holds an unbalanced hand with at least nine cards in two suits (i.e. 5 in one and 4 in the other), at least one of which is a major. :*2 shows hearts and another suit, and :*2 shows spades and a minor suit. Subsequent bidding The foregoing includes the possibility that the 2 overcaller holds both majors. Using Aspro with five spades and four or five hearts, the 2 bid is followed by 2 over partner's 2 or 2; with four spades and five hearts, one rebids 2 over partner's 2. ...

Asptro Convention
Asptro is a contract bridge bidding convention used to intervene over a 1NT opening bid. Its methodology and hence its designation is a combination of two similar conventions – Aspro and Astro. *2 shows at least 5-4 either way round in hearts, the ''anchor'', and a minor suit. Exceptionally the intervenor holds hearts and spades with preference for spades. *2 shows at least 5-4 either way round in spades, the anchor, and another suit. If the other suit is hearts, there is preference for hearts. *2 and 2 are natural. Partner can bid two of the anchor suit, 2M, expecting to play that contract (sign off). 2 is a non-forcing enquiry, if available, and 2NT is a forcing enquiry. Other replies are natural. Responder can also pass with 6+ length in the bid minor. (You cannot expect support from partner but it might be the least evil). After a 2 reply, the 2 intervenor passes with five diamonds or bids the 5 card suit, always the unknown one with 5-5. After a 2NT reply, t ...

Brozel
Brozel is a contract bridge bidding convention used to intervene after an opposing one notrump (1NT) opening bid. It features the following calls: *Double – shows any single suit; advancer bids 2, after which intervenor corrects to his actual suit (or passes with clubs). This was originally played as requiring either a solid suit or a very good suit and an entry, leaving advancer the opportunity to pass with a couple of side-suit stoppers, though many partnerships now allow a weaker suit. *2 – shows clubs and hearts *2 – shows diamonds and hearts *2 – shows hearts and spades *2 – shows spades and an unspecified minor suit *2NT – shows clubs and diamonds Brozel is named loosely after its creator, Bernard Zeller. Cappelletti Convention
Cappelletti (also called Hamilton and Pottage) is one of many defensive bridge bidding conventions used in the card game contract bridge to compete or interfere in the auction when an opponent has opened one notrump (1NT). Usually attributed to Michael Cappelletti and his longtime partner Edwin Lewis, origin of the concept is also claimed by Fred Hamilton, John Pottage and Gerald Helms. Cappelletti can show a variety of one- and two-suited hands while retaining the penalty double for stronger hands. Application Cappelletti is particularly recommended for use against a weak 1NT opening (12-14 HCP) but can also be used against stronger 1NT openings (15-17 HCP). Cappelletti can be employed in either the direct or balancing seat. Double When holding 15 or more high card points (HCP), a Double is for penalties. Overcalls With 9-14 HCP, other overcalls are artificial bids promising either a one-suited or two-suited holding. Importance is given to the state of vulnerability and the loca ...

Landy Convention
Landy, named after its inventor Alvin Landy, is the first of several conventional defenses created to compete against an opponent's one notrump (1NT) opening. Landy is a 2 overcall of the opponents' 1NT opening to show at least four cards in each of the major suits; all other bids are natural. Requirements for the overcall vary from partnership to partnership: some require 5-5, some 5-4, and yet others only 4-4 (provided the overall strength is sufficient). The partner can take a preference to either major or make a non-forcing bid of a suit; 2NT is used as a forcing query. Extended Landy An extension was proposed by Ira Rubin in 1947 using 2 as a takeout request after a response or rebid of 1NT after a suit opening. It implies more distribution and less strength than a double. It also applies in the passout seat. Based on his initial inability to overcall the 1 opening directly, the bid of 2 by North shows five or more clubs and exactly four hearts. Similar uses were develop ...
