Astra Films
Astra Films was a British film production and film distribution, distribution company of the silent era. It was set up in Leeds following the First World War by the film director Herbert Wilcox, his younger brother Charles Wilcox and H.W. Thompson, a leading figure in film distribution in the North of England.Low p.132-33 After the company's initial success, Wilcox left the firm to set up on his own and rose to become one of the most successful independent film, independent producer-directors in the world. After a merger the company released films under the name Astra-National. While smaller than the leading British studios Ideal Films and Stoll Pictures, it was an important producer of films before the Slump of 1924. Astra Film Corp
Astra Film Corp was an American film production company that produced silent films. Louis J. Gasnier was the company's president. George B. Seitz co-founded it. It was making films by 1916. It became Louis J. Gasnier Productions after Seitz left. The studio operated in Jersey City, New Jersey before expanding to Fort Lee, New Jersey. The Fort Lee studio site at 1 Congress Street was acquired from Pathé in 1916. The company distributed its films with Pathé. Rolin Studio in Los Angeles also worked with Pathé. The company's ''Hands Up (serial), Hands Up'' serial film, serial included a storyline featuring the Inca Empire, Inca. The studio produced Pathé's photoplay films including ''Stranded in Arcady''. Mary Odette
Marie Odette Goimbault (10 August 1901 – 26 March 1987), known professionally as Mary Odette, was a French-born film actress. Odette starred in a number of films made by Astra Films. After the slump of 1924 dramatically reduced the number of British films being made, she appeared in several Continental European productions. She retired from films in 1928, shortly before the arrival of sound films in Britain. ''Paddy the Next Best Thing'' is a 1923 British silent romance film directed by Graham Cutts and starring Mae Marsh, Darby Foster and Lilian Douglas. It was based on the 1908 novel of the same title by Gertrude Page and a 1920 stage adaptation, which was later adapted into a 1933 American film. It was made at the Gainsborough Studios in Islington. Production Herbert Wilcox had a lot of success distributing a British film, '' A Peep Behind the Scenes'' (1919) and decided to produce a British film himself. He raised £1,400 and picked ''The Wonderful Story'' because he believed as it was homely and had few characters it would be suited for the cinema.
