Jacob Astley, 3rd Baron Astley Of Reading
Jacob Astley, 3rd Baron Astley of Reading (c. 1654 – 1688) was an English peer. He was the elder son of Isaac Astley, 2nd Baron Astley of Reading and his wife Anne Stydolfe, fourth daughter of Sir Francis Stydolfe. In 1662, he succeeded his father as baron. Astley was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. He married his cousin Frances Stydolfe, daughter of Sir Richard Stydolfe, 1st Baronet. Their marriage was childless. Thomas Astley (died 1759) was a bookseller and publisher in London in the 18th century. He ran his business from Saint Paul's Churchyard (circa 1726-1742) and Paternoster Row (circa 1745). Thea Beatrice May Astley (25 August 1925 – 17 August 2004) was an Australian novelist and short story writer. She was a prolific writer who was published for over 40 years from 1958. At the time of her death, she had won more Miles Franklin Awards, Australia's major literary award, than any other writer. Philip Astley (8 January 1742 – 20 October 1814) was an English equestrian, circus owner, and inventor, regarded as being the " father of the modern circus". Modern circus, as an integrated entertainment experience that includes music, domesticated animals, acrobats, and clowns, traces its heritage to Astley's Amphitheatre, a riding school that Astley founded in London following the success of trick-riding displays given by him and his wife Patty Jones in 1768.
