Astel (film)
''Astel'' is a Senegalese-French short drama film, directed by Ramata-Toulaye Sy and released in 2021. The film stars Hawa Mamadou Dia as Astel, a young girl in Senegal who loves to accompany her father (Cherif Amadou Diallo) when he herds cows, but is forced to conform to more traditional "women's work" with her mother (Khady Diallo) after a shepherd's leering looks at her lead her father to realize she is no longer safe. The film premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was the winner of the Share Her Journey award. Ramata-Toulaye Sy
Ramata-Toulaye Sy is a French-Senegalese film director and screenwriter. Early life and education Ramata-Toulaye Sy was born in Bezons and studied at La Fémis in Paris. Career Sy's 2021 short film '' Astel'' was the winner of the Share Her Journey award at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, and the SACD Award and a Special Jury Prize at the 2022 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. Sy was a cowriter of the feature films ''Sibel'' and '' Our Lady of the Nile (Notre-Dame-du-Nil)'', before making ''Astel'' as her first directorial project. Share Her Journey is a Canadian film program, created by the Toronto International Film Festival to foster the development and career advancement of women in the film industry. First launched in 2017 as a five-year campaign to offer residency and talent accelerator programs for emerging women filmmakers, it became more widely known in 2018 when it organized a public rally on John Street near the TIFF Bell Lightbox to publicize and advocate for action on the issues that women in film still face, including sexual harassment and lack of opportunity.
