Association Of Australian Artistes
{{Use dmy dates, date=March 2021 The Association of Australian Artistes was established in London in 1975 by Australian expatriate James Hunt. It was based at Australia House and its aims and objectives were to present new Australian plays around London's Fringe featuring professional Australian actors then living in London. The inaugural Production Coordinator was Barbara Angell and a fund-raising concert was held in the Australia House basement on Sunday, 25 January 1976, coinciding with the Australia Day Weekend. Monies raised supported the group during its lifetime. Members included Ken Short Darlene Johnson, Bob Hornery, Mark McManus. Playwrights who were premiered in London included Steve J. Australia House
The High Commission of Australia in London is the diplomatic mission of Australia in the United Kingdom. It is located in Australia House, a Grade II listed building. It was Australia's first diplomatic mission and is the longest continuously occupied diplomatic mission in the United Kingdom. History A major landmark on the Strand, London, construction on the building by the Dove Brothers commenced in 1913, but shipping problems caused by the First World War delayed completion. It was officially opened by King George V in a ceremony on 3 August 1918 attended by the Australian Prime Minister William Morris Hughes. The cost of the triangular shaped land was £379,756 (£ in ) when purchased by the Commonwealth of Australia in 1912 and building and other associated costs brought total expenditure to about £1 million. Barbara Angell
Barbara Angell (6 March 1935) also known as Barb Angell and Angela Barrsometimes wrongly credited as Barbara Angel – was Australia's first female television comedy writer-entertainer. She was born in Melbourne and educated at Presbyterian Ladies' College. Career She began as an actress with Melbourne's Little Theatre (later St Martins) under Brett Randall and Irene Mitchell, for whom she debuted in their 1955 production of '' The Guinea Pig''. She worked as a dancer-comedian with the Tivoli Circuit from 1955–8, and in comedy sketches. She was in Melbourne's first TV variety show, a live weekly program called ''Tivoli Party Time'' (1956–7), as one of the nuclear cast that featured her with Buster Fiddess, Iris Shand (wife of actor Ron Shand) and Don Williams. Bob Hornery
Robert James Hornery (28 May 1931 – 26 May 2015) was an Australian actor. He won both the Helpmann Awards and the Equity Awards lifetime achievement award, with a career spanning 60 years, in both Britain and Australia. He was well known for his ability to ad lib. Early life and education Robert Hornery was born on 28 May 1931, in Randwick, New South Wales, to Edward Hornery, a sales rep, and his wife, Veronica (née Gallen). He appeared in plays at the local Catholic secondary school, Marcellin College. Upon leaving school, he worked as a booking clerk for Butler Airways. During this period, he also performed in revues with amateur companies. Career theatre Hornery started his career in theatre in 1949, and made his professional debut in 1953, when he played Eustace Smell, the town crier and sidekick, in a production of Jack and the Beanstalk, at Sydney's Capitol Theatre. Mark McManus
Mark McManus (21 February 1935 – 6 June 1994) was a Scottish actor. He has played roles in British television series '' Sam,'' '' Bulman, The Brothers, Strangers,'' and ''Dramarama'' and starred in the feature film '' 2000 Weeks''. He was best known for playing the tough Glaswegian Detective Chief Inspector Jim Taggart in the long-running STV television series ''Taggart'' from 1983 until his death in 1994. Career McManus was born in Hamilton, Scotland, and moved to Hillingdon in London, England when he was three years old, until he moved again at the age of 16 to Australia, where he performed in amateur theatre groups that led him to becoming a professional actor.
