Association For Citizenship Teaching
The Association for Citizenship Teaching (ACT) is a professional subject association in the United Kingdom for those involved in citizenship education. The association was founded by Sir Bernard Crick in 2001, to promote citizenship teaching to young people and provide support to citizenship teachers in England. The Honorary President is David Blunkett. In 2017 the Board of Trustees appointed Liz Moorse the first Chief Executive of the charity. Citizenship Education (subject)
Citizenship education is taught in schools, as an academic subject similar to politics or sociology. It is known by different names in different countries - for example, ‘citizenship education’ (or just ‘citizenship’ for short) in the UK, ‘civics’ in the US, and ‘education for democratic citizenship’ in parts of Europe. The different names for the subject is mirrored in the different approaches towards citizenship education adopted in different countries. These are often a consequence of the unique historical and political developments within different countries. In many countries, the focus of the teaching is on active citizenship. Bernard Crick
Sir Bernard Rowland Crick (16 December 1929 – 19 December 2008) was a British political theorist and democratic socialist whose views can be summarised as "politics is ethics done in public". He sought to arrive at a "politics of action", as opposed to a "politics of thought" or of ideology, and he held that He was a leading critic of behaviouralism. David Blunkett
David Blunkett, Baron Blunkett, (born 6 June 1947) is a British Labour Party politician who has been a Member of the House of Lords since 2015, and previously served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough from 1987 to 2015, when he stood down. Blind since birth, and coming from a poor family in one of Sheffield's most deprived districts, he rose to become Education and Employment Secretary, Home Secretary and Work and Pensions Secretary in Tony Blair's Cabinet following Labour's victory in the 1997 general election.
