Assistant Postmaster General
The Assistant Postmaster General is a defunct junior ministerial position in the United Kingdom Government. The title of Postmaster General was abolished under the Post Office Act 1969. A new public authority governed by a chairman was established under the name of the "Post Office". The position of "Postmaster General" was replaced with Minister of Posts and Telecommunications and that of Assistant Postmaster General was replaced by a Parliamentary Secretary post. Postmaster General Of The United Kingdom
The Postmaster General of the United Kingdom was a Cabinet-level ministerial position in HM Government. Aside from maintaining the postal system, the Telegraph Act 1868 established the Postmaster General's right to exclusively maintain electric telegraphs. This would subsequently extend to telecommunications and broadcasting. The office was abolished in 1969 by the Post Office Act 1969. A replacement public corporation, governed by a chairman, was established under the name of the ''Post Office'' (later subsumed by Royal Mail Group). The cabinet position of ''Postmaster General'' was replaced by a ''Minister of Posts and Telecommunications'', with reduced powers, until 1974; most regulatory functions have now been delegated to the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Allan Chapman (politician)
Allan Chapman (18 March 1897 – 7 January 1966) was a Scottish Unionist Party politician. Chapman was the son of H. Williams Chapman and attended Queens' College, Cambridge. He was elected at the 1935 general election as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Rutherglen constituency in Lanarkshire. He held the seat during the war years, but at the 1945 general election he was defeated by the Labour Party candidate Gilbert McAllister. In the war-time coalition government, he was Assistant Postmaster-General from March 1941 to March 1942, and then Under-Secretary of State for Scotland until the coalition government was dissolved in May 1945. In the subsequent caretaker government he then shared the post with Thomas Dunlop Galbraith until the new Labour Government took office at the end of July. He was married to Beatrice Cox. Norman Pentland
Norman Pentland (9 September 1912 – 28 October 1972) was a British Labour Member of Parliament. Pentland was educated at Fatfield County School, then in 1926 became a miner, based at the Harraton Colliery. In 1949, he was elected as a checkweighman, and by this time, he was heavily involved in the Durham Area of the National Union of Mineworkers, and the local Labour Party. Pentland served on Chester-le-Street Rural District Council, and was its chair in 1952/53. Also in 1952, he was elected to the executive committee of the Durham Miners. Joseph Slater, Baron Slater, BEM (13 June 1904 – 21 April 1977) was a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Sedgefield in County Durham at the 1950 general election, following the retirement of John Leslie. Ray Mawby
Raymond Llewellyn Mawby (6 February 1922 – 22 July 1990) was a British Member of Parliament for the Conservative Party and a junior Minister, who was in the pay of 2nd Directorate of the General Staff of the Czechoslovak People's Army, the military intelligence service of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. Early life and political career Mawby was educated at Long Lawford school. He worked as an electrician, and entered politics through his involvement with trade unionism. He was an official in the Rugby branch of the Electrical Trades Union and became the first president of the Conservative Trade Unionists' national advisory committee. Irene Mervyn Parnicott Pike, Baroness Pike, (16 September 1918 – 11 January 2004) was a British Conservative politician. The name by which she came to be known, Mervyn, had been the name of her father's best friend, who was to have been her godfather; when he was killed in action, a few days before she was born, her father decided that the baby would take his name. Sir Kenneth Pugh Thompson, 1st Baronet (24 December 1909 – 4 January 1984) was a British company director and politician from Liverpool. He served fourteen years in Parliament but is most known for his contribution to local government where he was chairman of Merseyside County Council and deputy chairman of the Merseyside Development Corporation. Cuthbert James McCall Alport, Baron Alport, (22 March 1912 – 28 October 1998) was a Conservative Party politician, minister, and life peer. Early life "Cub" Alport was educated at Haileybury College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire, England, and graduated with a degree in History and Law from Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1934. Leonard David Gammans
Sir Leonard David Gammans, 1st Baronet (10 November 1895 – 8 February 1957), known as David Gammans, was a British Conservative Party politician. Gammans was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School. He served with the Royal Field Artillery 1914–1918. He was in the Colonial Service in Malaya, 1920-1934 and attached to the British Embassy in Tokyo, 1926–1928. In 1930 he toured in India, Europe and America and, on retiring from the Colonial Service, lectured in the US and Canada. he was Director and Secretary of the Land Settlement Association, 1934–1939. Charles Rider Hobson, Baron Hobson (18 February 1904 – 17 February 1966) was a British Labour politician and life peer. Wilfrid Andrew Burke (23 November 1889 – 18 July 1968) was a British Trade union organiser and politician who achieved high office in the Labour Party and served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Burnley for 24 years. William John St Clair Anstruther-Gray, Baron Kilmany, MC PC (5 March 1905 – 6 August 1985) was a Scottish Unionist Party politician.
