Assefa Gebre-Mariam Tesema
Assefa Gebre-Mariam Tessema (also spelt Gebremariam, Tesema; born 1936) is an Ethiopian poet and academic. He wrote the national anthem of Ethiopia from 1975 to 1992, Ethiopia, Ethiopia, Ethiopia be first. , he was working as a teacher in Kaffa Province. Biography Assefa studied philosophy and literature at the University of Addis Ababa. He taught Amharic language and literature at Leningrad University for four years before continuing his education in Addis Ababa and Edinburgh. He was a founder of the Ethiopian Writers' Association and has served as its secretary general since 1978. In 1986, Assefa was serving as the director of the Academy of Ethiopian Languages in Addis Ababa. In 1996, he was part of a panel that worked on an Amharic science and technology dictionary published by the academy. Ethiopia, Ethiopia, Ethiopia Be First
( am, ኢትዮጵያ ኢትዮጵያ ኢትዮጵያ ቅደሚ, "Ethiopia, Ethiopia, Ethiopia be first") was the national anthem of Ethiopia from 1975 to 1992, during the Derg military junta of Mengistu Haile Mariam. The anthem was first performed on Revolution Day on 12 September 1975. When the junta was reorganized in 1987 as the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the song was retained until 1992. The lyrics were written by poet Assefa Gebre-Mariam Tesema, and the music was composed by musician Daniel Yohannes Haggos. Kaffa Province
Kaffa ( Amharic: ከፋ) was a province on the southwestern side of Ethiopia; its capital city was Bonga. It was named after the former Kingdom of Kaffa or "Kefa". Kaffa was bordered on the west by Sudan, on the northwest by Illubabor, on the north by Walega, on the northeast by Shewa, on the east by Sidamo, and on the southeast by Gamu-Gofa. Legendary accounts state that the etymology of Kaffa is from the Arabic ''qahwah'' meaning "a drink from berries". According to legend, ancestors of today's Kaffa people in southwest Ethiopia were the first to cultivate the coffee plant and recognise the energising effect of the coffee beverage. Academy Of Ethiopian Languages
The Imperial Academy was the national academy of Ethiopia, first established by the Ministry of Education and Fine Arts in 1942. It was tasked with preserving the "traditional genius" of the country; among other things, the native Ethiopic script and the literary and scholarly tradition it enabled, as well as the "promotion of research in languages and fine arts". In 1956 Emperor Haile Selassie promulgated a decree chartering the Academy as an independent organisation. The Academy, as a single body, eventually ceased to operate during the time of the Derg regime in the 1980s, although some of its constituent organizations have persisted- directly or indirectly- to the present.
