Asociacion Feminista Ilongga
Association Feminista Ilonga, was a Filipino women's organization that was founded in 1906.Kathleen Nadeau, Sangita Rayamajhi Women's Roles in Asia' It was founded by Pura Villanueva Kalaw. It followed the foundation of Asociacion Feminista Filipina, with the purpose of focusing on women's suffrage. Pura Villanueva Kalaw
Purificacion "Pura" Villanueva Kalaw (27 August 1886 – 21 March 1954) was a Filipina beauty queen, feminist, journalist, and writer. Early life Purificacion Garcia Villanueva was born in the town of Arevalo, Iloilo to Emilio Villanueva and Emilia Garcia. Her mother was born in Palencia, Spain. At age 22, Pura Villanueva became the first "Queen of the Manila Carnival." Career In 1906 Pura Villanueva organized a suffrage group, the Asociacion Feminista Ilongga.Artemio R. Guillermo, ed.''Historical Dictionary of the Philippines''(Scarecrow Press 2012): 223. Her efforts led to the first suffrage bill reaching the Philippine Assembly in 1907. 1937 Philippine Women's Suffrage Plebiscite
A legislature plebiscite was held in 1937 to decide whether or not women could vote. Multiple women's movements started in 1910, which led to the plebiscite in 1937 where women voted for or against for women's suffrage rights. Filipino women worked hard to mobilize and fight for women's suffrage in the early 1900s and gained victory after 447,725 out of 500,000 votes affirmed to having women's right to vote. Counter arguments against women gaining the right to vote in the Philippines were stated due to the fact that it would ruin family unity, giving less power to the husband or man of the house in the family. Prior to the plebiscite, electors voted on the approval of the new Philippine constitution. Violence Against Women is "the word or concept (that) has been used in a broad, inclusive manner to encompass verbal abuse, intimidation, physical harassment, homicide, sexual assault, and rape (of women in particular)."
