Ashley Miller (director)
Ashley Miller (August 11, 1877 – November 19, 1949) was an American director, screenwriter, playwright, and actor. He directed 133 films between 1909 and 1923. Miller was born in Cincinnati and attended schools in Detroit, Michigan. Miller's stage debut came in September 1904 when he portrayed Francois in a production of ''Richelieu''. He went on to act with stock theater companies in Boston, Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia. Plays in which he performed include ''Prince Otto'', ''Romeo and Juliet'', ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'', ''My Lady Peggy Goes to Town'', and '' The Parisian Model''. His roles in the latter two productions were singing parts. Miller formed a troupe that presented plays in New York City's schools and settlement houses. He also worked as a director of silent films for the Edison Biograph Studio. Ethel Browning (born Ethel Bull; April 17, 1877 – September 22, 1965) was an American actress and screenwriter. Early years The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Bull, Browning was born in Indianapolis and lived on the South Side of St. Louis, Missouri, until she debuted on stage, after which her family moved to Dayton, Ohio. Career Browning debuted on stage in a production of ''Ye Olden Trouble'' (1892) in Trenton, New Jersey. After being a child actress with a Broadway acting company headed by Joseph Jefferson, Browning matured to ingenue roles with Nat Goodwin's troupe, including traveling with that group on an Australian tour. In 1898, Browning acted with the Park Theater Stock Company until a disagreement arose between her and Leonard Grover, the theater's manager. ''The House of Fear'' was a 1915 American silent mystery film based on a story by John T. McIntyre. It was the third and final film in the ''Ashton-Kirk, Investigator'' series, all directed by Ashley Miller and Arnold Daly and starring Daly. This film is presumed lost. Synopsis Grace Cramp (Jeanne Eagels) and her brother Charles (Sheldon Lewis), ask Ashton-Kirk to investigate strange events involving Mexicans that are occurring at their house. Ashton-Kirk learns from information provided by an agent in Mexico that their father had been an engraver who made forged currency plates when in need of money. The siblings' father had forged currency plates for a thief (Charles Kraus) but had never delivered them. ''The Marriage Speculation'' is a 1917 comedy-drama film directed by Ashley Miller. Plot Mr. Cliday is an old man who has saved $10,000 after 20 years of employment at a pickle factory. He decides to invest the money in young Clara Wilson's education if she agrees to marry a rich man who will ensure that Mr. Cliday has enough money to support himself for the rest of his life. However, this means that Clara Wilson has to leave her current lover, Billie Perkins. Clara does not like any of the men who Cliday wants her to marry, but she nonetheless agrees to marry an Italian count. By the time of the wedding, Billy is able to pay Mr. Cliday the money needed to insure his retirement. At the wedding, Billy wears a disguise to look like the count.
