Ashley, Cheshire
Ashley is a village and civil parish in Cheshire, England. At the 2001 United Kingdom census, 2001 census, it had a population of 261. The village is close to the border with Greater Manchester, just to the south of the M56 motorway and Manchester Airport. Neighbouring villages include Hale, Greater Manchester, Hale, Rostherne and Mobberley. There is a public house, The Greyhound Inn. The Brereton family were Lords of the Manor of Ashley for several generations, from the reign of Henry VIII to about 1660. Ashley Cricket Club was founded in 1888. Cheshire East is a unitary authority area with Borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. The local authority is Cheshire East Council. This is a list of lawyers who held the rank of serjeant-at-law at the Irish Bar. Origins of the office of serjeant The first recorded serjeant was Roger Owen, who was appointed between 1261 and 1266, although the title itself was not commonly used in Ireland until about 1388; the earlier terms were "serviens", "King's Narrator" or "King's Pleader". The term Pleader was still in use in the 1470s. However, there is a reference to Richard le Blond as the King's "Serjeant pleader" in 1305 or 1306. In the early years of the office, appointment as serjeant might be temporary and might cover only a part of the country, although John de Neville was acting as Serjeant in 1295-6 "for all parts of Ireland". St Elizabeth's Church, Ashley
St Elizabeth's Church is on Ashley Road in the village of Ashley, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Bowdon, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield, and the diocese of Chester. Its benefice is combined with that of St Peter, Hale. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. History The church was built in 1880 as a chapel of ease to St Mary, Bowdon, and became a parish in its own right the following year. It was designed by Wilbraham Egerton, who was later to become the 1st Earl Egerton. Architecture St Elizabeth's is constructed in red brick and red terracotta, and has a red tiled roof. Ashley Hall, Cheshire
Ashley Hall is a English country houses, country house standing to the north of the village of Ashley, Cheshire, Ashley, Cheshire, England. It dates from the late 16th to the early 17th century, with additions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The house is historically important because it was here that the Cheshire gentlemen met in 1715 to decide whether to support the House of Stuart, Stuarts or the House of Hanover, Hanoverians. They decided on the latter and later commissioned a set of portraits, which now hang in Tatton Hall. John Brereton (Irish Lawyer)
Sir John Brereton (1576–1629) was an English-born lawyer who held office in Ireland as Serjeant-at-law (Ireland), Serjeant-at-law.Kenny p.210 He was born in Ashley, Cheshire, one of the eight sons of George Brereton of Ashley Hall and Sybil Arderne, daughter of William Arderne of Timperley, near Altrincham. The Breretons were descended from Sir William Brereton, who was Earl Marshal of Ireland in the time of Henry VIII. John was baptised at the parish church in Bowdon, Greater Manchester, Bowdon on 20 June 1576. He attended Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, of which he was later a generous benefactor. He practised as an lawyer, attorney for some years and was then called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1609. He moved to Ireland and was admitted to the King's Inn in 1613.
