Ashland Downtown Historic District
The Ashland Downtown Historic District in Ashland, Oregon is a historic district (United States) which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The district is roughly bounded by Lithia Way and C Street, Church, Lithia Park and Hargadine and Gresham Streets. The listing included 55 contributing buildings and six contributing objects, as well as 26 non-contributing buildings and one non-contributing object. Eleven buildings were already separately listed on the National Register. Ashland, Oregon
Ashland is a city in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. It lies along Interstate 5 approximately 16 miles (26 km) north of the California border and near the south end of the Rogue Valley. The city's population was 21,360 at the 2020 census. The city is the home of Southern Oregon University (SOU) and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). These are important to Ashland's economy, which also depends on restaurants, galleries, and retail stores that cater to tourists. Lithia Park along Ashland Creek, historic buildings, and a paved intercity bike trail provide additional visitor attractions. Ashland, originally called "Ashland Mills", was named after Ashland County, Ohio, the original home of founder Abel Helman, and secondarily for Ashland, Kentucky, where other founders had family connections. Trinity Episcopal Church is a historic Episcopal church at 44 N. 2nd Street in Ashland, Oregon. It is the oldest church in Ashland. Construction began in 1894 and was completed in 1895. Its design was based on drawings by local builder W. J. Schmidt. Built in the Gothic Revival style, it features a pitched gable roof, a pointed west-facing window, a gabled south-facing porch, and a trussed rafter roof. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Lithia Springs Hotel
Lithia Springs Hotel was a grand hotel in Tallapoosa, Georgia built by Ralph L. Spencer between 1881 and 1882. It was the largest hotel in the Southeast in the late 19th century to early 20th century. It had 175 rooms, a banquet hall, an elevator, a billiard hall, poolrooms, and a large ballroom. People from all over the country traveled to the Lithia Springs Hotel for health reasons, business, or leisure travel. Many from New York traveled by train for 32 hours. The cost of a roundtrip ticket to Tallapoosa was $38.65. Unfortunately, the economy caused the grand hotel to shut its doors. Several years later the hotel, which was now in ruins, became a fire hazard and had to be dismantled. The Ashland Springs Hotel is a historic hotel in Ashland, Oregon, United States. Built in 1925, it was formerly known as the Mark Antony Motor Hotel or the Lithia Springs Hotel. First Baptist Church (Ashland, Oregon)
First Baptist Church is a historic church at 241 Hargadine Street in Ashland, Oregon. It was built in 1911 and added to the National Register in 1979. Ashland's First Baptist Church was sold in the late 1960s. Over the next fifteen years and multiple owners the building remained vacant and deteriorated through vandalism. It was, at one point, painted bright pink, creating a landmark known locally as "the Old Pink Church." In 1982 the boarded-up building was purchased by Craig Hudson to create the Oregon Cabaret Theatre, restoring the structure to its 1911 appearance, including replication of many of the stained glass windows.
