Asella
Asella ( om, Asallaa, ʾÄsäla, am, አሰላ) is a town in central Ethiopia. Located in the Arsi Zone of the Oromia Region south from Addis Ababa, this town has a latitude and longitude of , with an elevation of 2,430 meters. Asella hosts an Asella Airport (IATA code ALK). Asalla was the capital of Arsi Province until that province was demoted to a Zone of Oromia with the adoption of the 1995 Constitution. It retains some administrative functions as the seat of the present Arsi Zone. History Asalla town got its start before the Second Italian-Abyssinian War. The Italian occupiers wanted to make Asela into a provincial capital, but they were unable to build more than one two-story building and some warehouses of masonry. Sisay Bezabeh
Sisay Bezabeh (born 9 September 1977 in Asella, Oromia Region, Ethiopia) is an Australian athlete of Ethiopian descent who specialized in the 10,000 metres and the marathon. He participated in the Olympic Games twice but did not place. Biography At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Bezabeh participated in the 10,000 metres with a time of 28:21.63, he did not continue in the series. Four years later, at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, he participated in the Olympic Marathon. He ran a time of 2:25.26, and came in 60th place. His brother, Alemayehu Bezabeh, is currently a runner representing Spain. Zemzem Ahmed
Zemzem Ahmed Deko (born December 27, 1984, in Asella) is an Ethiopian steeplechase runner and road runner. She emerged as one of Ethiopia's top steeplechasers, and had broken her own personal records three times in 2007. Zemzem represented Ethiopia at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and competed in the women's 3000 m steeplechase, along with her teammates Sofia Assefa and Mekdes Bekele. She ran in the third heat of the competition, where she finished in fourth place and automatically advanced into the final, with a personal best time of 9:25.63. She bettered her performance in the final round, and set a national record, with a time of 9:17.85, just eight seconds faster than her own personal best, finishing only in seventh place. Haile Gebrselassie ( am, ኀይሌ ገብረ ሥላሴ, ''haylē gebre silassē''; born 18 April 1973) is an Ethiopian retired long-distance track, road running athlete, and businessman. He won two Olympic gold medals and four World Championship titles over the 10,000 metres. He triumphed in the Berlin Marathon four times consecutively and also had three straight wins at the Dubai Marathon. Further to this, he earned four world titles indoors and was the 2001 World Half Marathon Champion. Haile had major competition wins at distances between 1500 metres and the marathon, moving from outdoor, indoor and cross country running to road running in the latter part of his career. Arsi Zone
Arsi ( om, Godina Arsii) is a zone in Oromia Region of Ethiopia, named after a clan of the Oromo, who inhabit in the area. Arsi is bordered on the south by Bale Zone, on the southwest by the West Arsi Zone, on the northwest by East Shewa Zone, on the north by the Afar Region and on the east by West Hararghe Zone. It covers an area of 19,825.22 km2, divided into 25 districts (''weredas''). The population was officially estimated at 3,894,248 in mid 2022. The highest point in Arsi Zone is Mount Chilalo; other notable mountains in this zone include Mount Kaka and Mount Gugu. Arsi Mountains National Park was created in 2011 to protect a section of the mountains. Mohammed Aman Geleto (Amharic: መሀመድ አማን; born 10 January 1994) is an Ethiopian Middle distance running, middle-distance runner. Born in Asella, he is the winner of the 800-meter final at the 2013 World Athletics Championships in the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow. Aman also won consecutive 800 m titles at the 2009 African Junior Athletics Championships, 2009 and 2011 African Junior Athletics Championships. Arsi Province
Arsi Province (Amharic: አርሲ) was a Provinces of Ethiopia, province of Ethiopian Empire with its capital at Asella. Historically a part of the Emirate of Harar until its invasion by Menelik and subsequent incorporation into modern Ethiopia. The province was reduced to a Arsi Zone, Zone of the Oromia Region with the adoption of the 1995 Constitution of Ethiopia, new constitution in 1995. In more ancient times, the region is seemingly related to the Harla.
