''Ascension'' ( zh, 登楼叹) is a 2021 American documentary film directed and produced by Jessica Kingdon. It follows the pursuit of the Chinese dream through the social classes, prioritizing productivity and innovation. The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 12, 2021, where it won Best Documentary Feature. It was released on October 8, 2021, by MTV Documentary Films. Production Initially, Jessica Kingdon planned on making a trilogy of short films focusing on the cycle of production, consumption and waste, however, it was difficult to secure funding for a series, and instead decided to develop the trilogy into a feature film. Nathan Truesdell is an Academy Award nominated independent filmmaker. He is best known for his work on the documentary films ''Balloonfest'', ''Ascension'', and ''The Water Slide''. Jessica Kingdon
Jessica Kingdon is a Chinese American director and producer. She was nominated for the 2022 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for directing the documentary ''Ascension''. Career Kingdon received her BA from Columbia University in 2009 and her MA in media studies from The New School in 2014. She directed the 2017 documentary ''Commodity City,'' which focuses on the lives of Chinese wholesalers in Yiwu International Trade City, the world's largest wholesale market. The Cinema Eye Honors are awards recognizing excellence in nonfiction or documentary filmmaking and include awards for the disciplines of directing, producing, cinematography and editing. The awards are presented each January in New York and have been held since 2011 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens.
