Mount Asahi (Ishikari)
is a mountain in Asahikawa, Hokkaidō, Japan Japan ( ja, 日本, or , and formally , ''Nihonkoku'') is an island country in East Asia. It is situated in the northwest Pacific Ocean, and is bordered on the west by the Sea of Japan, while extending from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north .... It is part of the Ishikari Mountains. Mount Asahi hosts Mount Asahi Park and Asahiyama Zoo. Geology Mount Asahi is formed from non-alkaline mafic rock from the middle to late Miocene. Non-alkaline rock from pyroclastic flows in the late Miocene to early Pliocene are also present. Asahiyama Zoo
The is a municipal zoo that opened in July 1967 in Asahikawa, Hokkaidō, Japan, and is the northernmost zoo in the country. In August 2004, over 320,000 people had visited the zoo, the second highest number of visitors among all the zoos in Japan. Located in Higashi Asahikawa, on the outskirts of Asahikawa, the Asahiyama Zoo is accredited by the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA). History The Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo, and the Obihiro Zoo predate the construction of the Asahiyama Zoo. In 1964, the mayor at the time, Kōzō Igarashi, budgeted for the Asahiyama Zoo project, and chose Mount Asahi as the building site due to its geology and traffic convenience. Construction of the Asahiyama Zoo began in April 1966, and was completed in June 1967, at a total expense of 250 million yen. Kotonishiki Katsuhiro
Kotonishiki Katsuhiro (born June 8, 1968 as Hideyuki Matsuzawa) is a former sumo wrestler from Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. He began his career in 1984, reaching the top '' makuuchi'' division in 1989. He won two top division tournament titles from the '' maegashira'' ranks (the only wrestler ever to do so), the first in 1991 and the second in 1998. His highest rank was '' sekiwake'', which he held 21 times. He earned eighteen special prizes during his career, second on the all-time list, and defeated '' yokozuna'' eight times when ranked as a ''maegashira''. He retired in 2000 and after a long stint as a sumo coach at Oguruma stable, took the vacant elder name Asahiyama and branched out to form his own stable of the same name.
