Arvo Viitanen
Arvo Albert Viitanen (12 April 1924 – 28 April 1999) was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed in the 1950s. He won a silver medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo. He was born in Uurainen, Central Finland and died in Myllykoski. Viitanen also won five medals in the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with a gold in the 4 × 10 km relay (1954), a silver in the 15 km (1954), and bronzes in the 50 km (1954, 1958) and the 4 × 10 km relay (1958). Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Rules of cross-country skiing are sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and by various national organizations. International competitions include the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Such races occur over homologated, groomed courses designed to support classic (in-track) and freestyle events, where the skiers may employ skate skiing. It also encompasses cross-country ski marathon events, sanctioned by the Worldloppet Ski Federation, and cross-country ski orienteering events, sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation. Cross-country Skiing At The 1956 Winter Olympics – Men's 50 Kilometre
The men's 50 kilometre cross-country race at the 1956 Winter Olympics took place on 2 February. It was held at the Snow Stadium (''Lo Stadio della neve''), which was about from Cotrina. Thirty skiers from thirteen countries participated in the event. The Nordic countries once again dominated the event. In a reversal of the top two results in the race, Sweden at the 1956 Winter Olympics, Swedish skier Sixten Jernberg won the gold, Finland at the 1956 Winter Olympics, Fin Veikko Hakulinen took the silver and Soviet Union at the 1956 Winter Olympics, Russian Fedor Terentjev won the bronze. Jernberg would go on to win a bronze in the relay event giving him a full complement of gold, silver and bronze. Holmenkollen () is a mountain and a neighbourhood in the Vestre Aker borough of Oslo, Norway. It goes up to above sea level and is well-known for its international skiing competitions. Overview In addition to being a residential area, the area has been a ski recreation area since the late 19th century, with its famous ski jumping hill, the Holmenkollbakken, hosting competitions since 1892.
