Novokuznetsk ( rus, Новокузнецк, p=nəvəkʊzˈnʲɛt͡sk; literally: "new smith's", cjs, Аба-тура, ''Aba-tura'') is a city in Kemerovo Oblast (Kuzbass) in south-western Siberia, Russia. It is the second largest city in the oblast, after Kemerovo. Population: It was previously known as ''Kuznetsk'' until 1931, and as ''Stalinsk'' until 1961. History Founded in 1618 by men from Tomsk as a Cossack '' ostrog'' (fort) on the Tom River, it was initially called Kuznetsky ostrog (). It became the seat of Kuznetsky Uyezd in 1622. FC Novokuznetsk (Russian: ФК Новокузнецк) is a Russian football club from Novokuznetsk. Recent history MKN were relegated to the Russian Second Division after an 18th-place finish in 2005, and only finished 2nd in the "East" region, thus keeping them down another season. However, Lada Togliatti and Dinamo Makhachkala were denied licences for the First Division and thus also relegated. This, alongside the bankruptcy of Angusht Nazran, pushed Metallurg up alongside other second-place finishers SKA Rostov-na-Donu and Mordovia Saransk. History The club was founded in 1937 as ''Lokomotiv Krasnoyarsk'' and spent one season in Class D of the Soviet league. In 1957 the club was re-formed and entered the ''Far East'' zone of Class B. In 1968 Lokomotiv was renamed ''Rassvet'' and, in 1970, ''Avtomobilist''.
